Have You Got The Right Goal?

Have You Got The Right Goal?

“How do I know if this is the right goal for me?”

This is a question I’ve been asked a lot over the last few weeks.

I thought I’d quickly address it with you.

I think at this time of year it’s pretty normal to think about what you want to achieve. In fact, it’s great!

But the problem with all this “New Year, New Me” stuff that’s floating around in ads and January sales is that it can lead to people choosing goals that aren’t right for them!

And the only way to build genuine motivation, energy and momentum for your goal is to make sure you have the right one!

So, how do you know if you have the right goal, aka a champy?

(Remember – “champy” is my word for goal. Everyone in my mindset-coaching course School of Champions sets a champy not a goal).

I thought I’d share a quick tip with you.

I call it The Spook Test, and I reckon it’s the best tool for figuring out what you actually want to achieve for yourself. Let’s give it a go – it’s simple, I promise.

The Spook Test

Think about what you want to achieve this year.

How does it make you feel?

Are you excited, and even a little scared?

Or does it just feel boring and “meh”?

See, the right champy is not something you think you “should” do. A champy is a big stretch goal that genuinely excites you and even scares you a little bit. That’s why I call this the Spook Test. You should feel a little bit spooked by your champy!

I’ll give you an example.

Like lots of people who join School of Champions, one of my SOC-ers had a goal to lose weight. She said she’d been living in an “I’ll start on Monday” loop for years.

But, working through the steps in SOC, she decided to set a different champy – one that really pushed her outside her comfort zone and filled her with excitement.

She dropped the ‘lose weight’ goal and instead signed up to trek to Everest Base Camp, something she’d always wanted to do. The activities in SOC helped her realise that the outcome she really wanted out of ‘losing weight’ was to feel strong, physically fit, adventurous and confident.

Everest ticked those boxes. It was a champy that terrified and excited her – and it delivered in spades. Not only did she feel strong, fit and confident reaching Base Camp after 9 days of trekking and six months of training, but she even lost a little weight in the process!

The reason I’m so big on setting and getting champies is this: When you decide to achieve something that excites and scares you – and then you do the work to get there – you get confidence, resilience and grit in return. And all of that helps you to level up, in all areas of your life.

So, today, take the Spook Test.

If your champy doesn’t give you a buzz of excitement and that little edge of fear, then it’s not going to take you outside your comfort zone, and it’s probably not the right champy for you.

OK, that’s enough from me. I hope that helps!

My Hero, what a human being, all that courage in one person doesn't seem possible.  Humanity should follow this person's example.
