Early Years Maths CPD Day

Early Years Maths CPD Day

Friday 9th May 10.00am - 4pm | CREC, Birmingham

In this session we will look at the Statutory Framework for the EYFS and the concepts covered in teaching Early Number. We will identify the Early Learning Goals for number and counting and identify what the terms mean in practice. For example - what does a 'deep understanding of numbers' mean? What are the two types of subitising and why are they important? How can we best teach subitising, number bonds and composition of number? We will look at appropriate pedagogical strategies for teaching these. A range of manipulatives and representations will be explored for teaching about subitising, the composition of number and number bonds. Resources will be explored that will help you to teach the concepts more effectively through intentional learning and continuous provision.

Roy Broadfield is the founder and Primary National Consultant for Impact in Learning. Roy is in his 30th year in education most recently working as a Senior Lecturer in maths at the University of Worcester. Roy is a maths specialist teacher (MaST) and has delivered DfE-funded work as a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) for maths.

Our part time MA programme, accredited by Birmingham City University, is designed specifically for practitioners working in the early years sector and can be studied alongside and in support of your day-to-day role.

The course draws upon CREC's research expertise and enables students to work within a community of practice.

As well as providing students with expertise in early childhood, our programme also provides a grounding in research methods. In each year of their study, students are invited to specialise in areas such as Leadership, Music, Creativity and the Arts, Mentoring, and Nurturing Childhoods. They are also offered invaluable support for practice-based research. Certificate for Music Educators: Early Childhood

Our CME:EC cohort of 2024/2025 came to CREC at the end of February for the third core learning day. These core learning days provide the foundations of the course. Although, there are regular opportunities to meet together online throughout, coming together in person is such a valuable part of the course. As well as providing practical sessions to share, explore and deepen understanding and knowledge of early years music, the days encourage networking and discussion to form a community of learning.   During this learning day, consideration was given to: exploring behaviour management, observing musical play and looking at how different assessments frameworks can be used to assess children's learning. There was also an opportunity to play musically with technology.   If you work, or are looking to work, with music in the early years, then this is the course for you. It is the only Certificate for Music Educators course that focuses solely on the Early Years.
