Day 2 of the #IkigaiChallenge – Reflecting on Joy
I’m someone who easily finds joy in the things I do—maybe it’s because I have a storyteller’s mind? I can entertain myself, imagining epic adventures where I’m off in space, saving people with my magical unicorn rocket ship. While in reality, I’m just sipping a dirty chai latte, I’m far away from this world, losing track of time and direction!
I also lose myself in nature, from tending to my houseplants, garden, and fish, to watching the birds search for seeds. I love seeing the "kwikstertjie" chasing butterflies, observing bees buzzing, flowers blooming—it’s pure joy! Every plant that blooms feels like a little happiness unfolding. The sound of running water from my fish tank brings calmness to my home office. When I need to think, I stare into the tank, following the movement of the fish, almost finding answers there.
One day, I’ll have a vivarium to get lost in! The intricate balance of an ecosystem excites me—how everything depends on the next to thrive. What a beautiful world God has created for us to find joy in.

I also get lost in time when I’m with family and friends, building connections. I love listening to people’s stories and learning about their journeys. What starts as a simple coffee meetup can turn into an all-day adventure. I even find joy in participating in others’ hobbies, whether I’m good at them or not!
I’m the type of person you can never jokingly say, “dis ‘n lekker dag vir boom klim” because we will end up climbing that tree! During my varsity days, what started as just one drink with Shaun—still an acquaintance at the time—quickly turned into an unexpected adventure. On our way home, we passed a movie theater and, both being Marvel fans, we spotted a banner for Thor. Shaun casually said we should watch it, and without hesitation, I checked the showtimes. Turns out, the next screening was in 30 minutes! So, with no second thoughts, tickets were bought, snacks in hand, and off we went. What was meant to be one drink turned into a full day out with Shaun. Fast forward, and now we’re happily married—every day still feels like an adventure!
I’d love to hear what activities make you lose track of time! Do you have a spontaneous moment or even your own “rocket ship” story?
If I could save you 20% of your medical scheme cost within 90 days, without changing your medical scheme option, would you be interested?
