Breaking barriers: Work and Learn is building tomorrow’s cybersecurity talents

I firmly believe that every young person deserves a chance to discover their potential. But the reality is that not all of them get that chance. Some struggle to find their way into the job market, not because they lack talent, but because they lack the right opportunities, guidance, and experience.

That’s why I’m so proud of 'Work and Learn', a program we launched last year with MolenGeek and VDAB to help young people enter the world of IT and cybersecurity. Indeed, our program offers job-seeking young professionals the opportunity to work at Proximus Group, where they assist customers in need of support while developing their ICT skills through training and Microsoft certifications. This isn’t just a training program: it’s a game-changer.

The impact: one year later

When we launched Work and Learn, the goal was clear: to give unemployed young people the chance to acquire new skills and gain their first work experience. Now, as they approach the final phase of the program, it’s the perfect time to reflect on their journey.

It all started with intensive training at MolenGeek, where a small group of young talents built a strong foundation in IT and cybersecurity. They learned about network security, phishing prevention, authentication protocols, and troubleshooting techniques: all essential to understanding the digital world we operate in every day.

But training alone isn’t enough. That’s why, over the past months, these participants have embarked on internships within Proximus, fully immersed in our operations. Their journey has taken them across different teams, where they’ve been learning by doing, side by side with our experts:

🔹 At the Service Desk, they’ve handled real customer cases, troubleshooting Internet and TV issues, and strengthening cybersecurity by helping users protect their accounts from phishing and fraud.

🔹 Within our Security Center, they’ve been introduced to the world of network security monitoring, and seen first-hand how we protect our infrastructure.

🔹 At Proximus NXT IT, our affiliate specializing in IT services for Enterprise customers, they’ve worked alongside our Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), gaining hands-on experience in detecting, analyzing, and responding to cyber threats affecting businesses.

It’s not just about observing. They’re actively contributing, solving problems, and gaining real-world IT and cybersecurity experience inside a major telecommunications and IT company. And you know what takes the cake? They are thriving in this environment.

I recently spoke with some of the participants, and what they said really resonated with me:

“During my internship at Proximus, I learned a lot about how to support customers technically, together with great colleagues in a more fun atmosphere.” Ennasse
“An internship at Proximus is a guarantee for a good atmosphere and learning every day.” Stephan
“Proximus is an opportunity to gain experience and new skills, I like the atmosphere here, my coaches are the best and the people working here are top.” Rosa

That’s exactly what Work and Learn is all about. It’s about confidence, skills, and hands-on experience.

Cybersecurity needs talent, and we’re taking action

Cybersecurity is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Threats are evolving, attacks are getting more sophisticated, and companies are in desperate need of skilled professionals to protect their systems.

At Proximus, we are boldly building a connected world that people trust (one that is accessible to all), so society blooms. And that’s exactly what makes Work and Learn so important. This program isn’t just about teaching cybersecurity skills.

It’s about giving vulnerable people a real chance to be part of the digital world, equipping them with the knowledge and experience to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

I know how important it is to give young people the right opportunities. This generation definitely has potential, but often lacks access to the skills and experience needed to enter the job market.

If this program helps them gain confidence, develop new skills, and access career opportunities, then I think it has achieved its purpose.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners MolenGeek and VDAB, who share our vision and commitment to digital inclusion. It’s through strong collaborations like this that we can make a real difference.

To my colleagues, partners, and everyone reading this: Let’s keep creating these opportunities!

Great project. When I read the quotes from the participants, it makes me proud to work for Proximus...💜
