Ask me a11ything edition 13
Your daily spark for a more inclusive digital world. I will (try to) post a short newsletter daily with 5 short topics: A tip, a shoutout to a person, a shoutout to a tool, a quote and an idea.
✅ Tip of the Day
Graceful degradation
A strategy where you build a website using modern features, but ensure that if those features fail (due to older browsers, slow connections, assistive technologies, etc.), the core experience still works. It's especially helpful for accessibility
Eleanor Hecks wrote an excellent article on it. You can read it here :
✅ Ambassador in the spotlight
As a trusted consultant, Shani Dhanda partners with industry leaders and renowned brands to embed inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility across operations. Her holistic approach drives impactful change, helping businesses strengthen connections with diverse customer segments and elevate brand reputation.
Her work has influenced workplace culture, customer experience, and product design for over 1.5 million employees worldwide, delivering measurable results—higher revenue, productivity, and stronger community ties.
Beyond consulting, she is a TV and radio broadcaster, keynote speaker, social entrepreneur, and author. British Vogue describes her as "a multi-hyphenate, always on the move, motivating, and solving problems."

✅ Tool of the Day
Another UX technique that goes hand in hand with graceful degradation is Progressive enhancement. I believe the HTML5 boilerplate open source project is still a goldmine and good starter to explore clean and correct core HTML setups and it's built with the idea of progressive enhancement.
✅ Quote of the day
"Accessibility is both a state and a practice." - Sommer Panage
✅ Idea of the day
Smart Degradation Modes
A built-in system that detects feature failure (like a broken API call or missing font) and automatically triggers a lightweight fallback version without needing a full reload.
Made for accessibility advocates, designers, developers, and creators who care.
