Creativity Runs Deeper Than Language This could mean that large language models may never fully match us in creativity. When it comes to creativity, humans have no equal—neither among other species nor in comparison to current AI systems. The key aspect of thinking that underpins our unparalleled creativity is combinatorial thinking—the ability to generate an infinite number of complex ideas from a limited set of simple concepts. Combinatorial thinking seems closely tied to the use of language, which facilitates the creation and exchange of complex ideas with others. But what is the primary driver of our high-level creativity: pre-linguistic combinatorial thinking or language itself? 1) If language is the primary driver, then AI systems based on language models (which are nearly on par with humans in language use) have a good chance of catching up to and surpassing us in creativity. 2) However, if pre-linguistic combinatorial thinking is the root cause, then it's possible that language models, no matter how scaled-up, may never match our creativity. A new interdisciplinary study provides experimental evidence that combinatorial processes for forming complex ideas: - Begin to function in infants during the first year of life; - At this age, this ability is clearly not a result of language use (since language is not yet developed), but it is a precursor to learning in general. Thus, it is quite possible that AI systems may not be able to match our creativity merely by scaling up, because creativity runs deeper than language. https://lnkd.in/dTCXQne2 https://lnkd.in/du9F2ZGM

One wonders if the nets at the core of genAi are language - Or the beginnings of thinking neurons statistically modeling what our own cells do, with intermediate layers converting in and out of thinking space. Given that embeddings exist in the surf space between the ocean of language and the firmer ground of meaning already - one could imagine that. And as layers increase and embeddings widths widen (and increase meaning dimensionality and that kind of precision ) - do these forms pass our ability to think in these spaces ? Or remain bound by statically computed models ? 🧠🍪

🚀 New Medium Article Alert! ✍️ At first glance, irony and a Möbius strip might seem worlds apart—one’s a linguistic twist; the other, a mathematical marvel. But as I explore in my latest Medium article, The Problem with Artificial Intelligence: Irony Deficiency, these two share a surprising connection. 🤯 The Möbius strip, with its single-sided surface and infinite loop, is more than just a mathematical curiosity—it’s a metaphor for life’s quirks and contradictions. And irony? It’s the Möbius strip of language, twisting meaning and intent in ways that keep us thinking, laughing, and questioning. 🎥 Whether it’s Inception’s dream layers, the meta-humor of Rick and Morty, or the brilliance of quantum physics, Möbius-like loops show up in our stories, culture, and even science. They remind us to embrace ambiguity and contradiction—not as problems, but as opportunities for deeper understanding and creativity. 💡 Ready to explore the twists, turns, and layers? Check out my article and join me on this one-sided journey that never ends: 🔗 Read the full article on Medium https://bit.ly/3Dm3k50 #Storytelling #Creativity #Innovation #Irony #Mathematics #AI #CriticalThinking #Humor #Leadership #MöbiusStrip 🌀
