New research has confirmed that using waste clay and brick in cement production could reduce the material’s embodied carbon by up to 30%. A two-year study by the Mineral Products Association (MPA) shows that UK reclaimed clays and finely ground brick powder can be used as calcined clays in cement and concrete manufacturing to deliver lower emissions than the market-leading CEM I cement. This exciting study shows the potential for the construction industry to reduce its environmental impact. Using old bricks in this way is a viable solution for repurposing waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. https://lnkd.in/eRRD44Wu #Brickwork #Bricks #Build #Architecture #Contractor #BrickworkContractor #Construction #Bricklayer #Bricklayers #ConstructionNorthWest #NorthWestConstruction #Sustainability

Finally for concrete, decorative heat reflective asphalt has self healing mechanism embedded without the use of bacteria
Self-healing concrete!~ Great video from !World Economic Forum! Self-healing concrete is an innovative construction material designed to increase the durability and lifespan of concrete structures. Technically, it incorporates the use of specific additives or embedded materials, such as bacteria, microcapsules, or shape-memory polymers, that can react in the presence of water or cracks. When a crack forms, the self-healing mechanism is activated: bacteria can produce limestone to fill in the cracks, microcapsules may release healing agents that harden to repair the damage, or shape-memory polymers can expand to fill the crack spaces. This process not only seals the cracks to prevent further deterioration and ingress of harmful substances but also reduces maintenance costs and extends the structural life of concrete, making it more sustainable and efficient over time. What if a concrete sidewalk could melt ice by itself? Researchers at Drexel University have developed self-heating concrete that uses paraffin wax to melt snow and ice, potentially reducing the need for road salt. The concrete, which has shown effectiveness in various weather conditions, could extend road life and lower maintenance costs, although its initial cost is higher than traditional concrete. Today’s spotlight for Week 2 of The Concrete Centre’s Sustainability Series, lower carbon concrete technology is: Calcined clay. - Calcined clay is a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) that is generating much interest. In addition to being covered in part two of this week’s webinar, the following new resources are intended to help specifiers considering specifying calcined clays. https://lnkd.in/epR_kxDz - New web-based guidance on calcined clays – providing an introduction and overview, and their current inclusion in standards for concrete manufacture. Read about the Eureka Project, a recent research project identifying the suitability of local supplies of clay for use in concrete manufacture. https://lnkd.in/e5qwNMhR - The Re-C3 project is a recently completed research project which demonstrated the potential of reclaimed clays and finely ground bricks as SCMs. These lower value clays are currently discarded in UK quarry and brick production sites and could be used in cement and concrete. The project was a collaboration between MPA, academia and industry. The full report is available here, https://lnkd.in/ekurqQeE

The water-cement ratio is the ratio of the weight of water to the weight of cement used in a concrete mix. It's a crucial factor in determining the strength and durability of concrete. Generally, a lower water-cement ratio results in stronger and more durable concrete, while a higher ratio may lead to weaker concrete with decreased durability.

🚀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀! I’ve seen firsthand how crucial the suitable aggregate is for the durability and performance of asphalt and concrete. Here are the basic requirements for top-notch aggregate: ✔️ Hardness: Must resist wear and tear. ✔️Durability: Endures weathering without degrading. ✔️Shape: Angular particles interlock better. ✔️Size: Consistency in gradation ensures stability. ✔️Cleanliness: Free of clay, silt, and organic matter. ✔️Absorption: Low water absorption enhances longevity. ✔️Specific Gravity: Higher specific gravity indicates better quality. ✔️Surface Texture: Rough surfaces improve bond strength. ✔️Crushing Strength: High crushing strength withstands heavy loads. ✔️Soundness: Resists disintegration from freezing and thawing. ✔️Chemical Stability: Inert in the presence of alkalis. ✔️Toughness: Withstands impact and abrasive forces. ✔️Abrasion Resistance: Resists surface wear. ✔️Frost Resistance: Performs well in freezing conditions. ✔️Alkali-Aggregate Reactivity: Low reactivity with cement. ✔️Density: Ensures structural integrity. ✔️Cost-Effectiveness: Balances quality with affordability. ✔️Eco-Friendly: Sustainable sourcing and processing. ✔️Consistency: Uniform quality for reliable performance. ✔️Local Availability: Reduces transportation costs and environmental impact. 🌟🔧 Quality aggregates are the backbone of robust construction projects. Ensuring these requirements can significantly enhance the lifespan and strength of both asphalt and concrete structures. 📌𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬?
