Shelby American Is Building Its Own Ford Mustang GT350: Ford may no longer have the rights to build a GT350, but Shelby American has their own solution — with an 810-hp supercharged V-8. Sixty years ago, Shelby American proved that the Mustang could be a true race-ready performance car when it released the GT350 and GT350R. Shelby-branded Mustangs have returned a few times since, both as OEM-spec Ford Performance models and as custom builds by Shelby American — but the historic GT350 and GT500 nameplates were typically reserved for the finished Ford products over the past two decades. That changes with the latest GT350, which is a Shelby build, rather than a Ford one. The last car to wear the GT350 name was an official Ford Performance product sold new at dealerships, but a split between Ford and Shelby eventually led Ford to replace that product with the Dark Horse for the latest Mustang generation. The regular models were rare, but one specific variant stands out even today. In 1966, Carroll Shelby decided to produce the 427 'Super Snake' version of the Cobra to give it the proper sendoff that it deserved. Through its incredible power and distinct looks, the AC Shelby Cobra 427's production was extremely limited, becoming the rarest sports car in American history. It set the standard in the small car segment for years, known for its space, versatile engine options, and models like the Puma, Streetka, and Fusion. However, as the #automotive landscape shifted, the Fiesta couldn't keep pace with changing customer demands and market conditions. Recently, Jaguar Land Rover and Ford reversed their plans to adopt the agency model, and Stellantis postponed its plans until at least 2027. Some OEMs, like Mercedes-Benz, have firmly committed to the agency model, while others, such as Porsche, have decided against it. Despite these changes, major brands like BMW are still moving forward, with MINI set to transition in October. However, there are industry concerns, particularly from Volkswagen dealers, about the risks of extending the model to combustion vehicles, which could impact sales volumes. Today in History (TIH): Today in 2004 the final Oldsmobile was built in Lansing ending 107 years of tradition in the auto industry. Oldsmobile, originally an American car brand under General Motors, has quite a story. Founded back in 1897 by Ransom E. Olds, it was all about innovation and churning out vehicles that people loved. With over 35 million cars made, 14 million of those right in Lansing, Michigan, it's safe to say Olds Motor Vehicle Company left its mark. Nestled comfortably in the middle of GM's lineup, Oldsmobile was the Goldilocks of cars—not too fancy, not too basic, just right for those who wanted something a bit special without the Cadillac price tag. The brand's heyday in the early to mid-80s saw sales soaring past a million a year, but as the 90s rolled in, so did the competition, especially from those sleek premium imports. Despite a storied run, 2004 marked the end of the road for Oldsmobile. Still, it exited the stage as a legend, holding titles as one of the oldest car brands in the U.S. and the world, right up there with big names like Peugeot, Renault, Fiat, and Opet.

If you were bummed out that you can’t buy a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 from the Ford dealership anymore, then we have some good news for you. The GT350 is back, but now its being offered directly from Shelby American rather than Ford Performance. If you want one in your driveway, however, be ready to drop some serious coin. The new Shelby GT350 is based on the current Ford Mustang GT, and so the engine it builds off of is the excellent Coyote V-8 rather than the exotic flat-plane-crank Voodoo 5.2-liter found in Ford's homegrown GT350 and GT350R.
