On this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we are highlighting the work of our Indigenous Health Committee (IHC). The IHC, guided by the wisdom of the Grandmother’s Council and working alongside Indigenous community partners, was established in 2023 to establish distinctions-based cohorts (First Nation, Inuit, and Métis) to lead in the identification of key health priorities in clinical trial research through a human rights-based and sovereign approach to clinical trial research. Much of the work of the IHC is in response to several of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action – primarily 18-23 which fall under the Legacy area of Health. The ACT IHC is working to create a safe and respectful clinical trial research environment that redresses the history and ongoing nature of colonialism in healthcare in Canada while respecting and uplifting the rights of Indigenous Peoples to be self-determining in setting health priorities in clinical trial research that are responsive to the denial of their specific rights in health care, and to the identified needs of the communities themselves. Additionally, the demonstration projects under development by the IHC and community partners recognize the value of Indigenous healing practices and are helping to support the training and development of future Indigenous trial leaders.

WEBINAR: We are bringing together a panel of experts to discuss some of the key questions we explored in our latest research with Ipsos UK. We carried out a series of deliberative workshops with members of the public and, together with the latest wave of our polling, captured unique insights to understand how the public is feeling about the NHS and some of the key policy issues for the next government. The webinar will give an overview of the research report findings and discuss: ➡️ do the public have faith in the current model for the NHS? ➡️ are the public willing to increase funding for the NHS, and where do they think resources should be directed? ➡️ how can the government gain the public's confidence in their plans? Find out more and register to attend 👇 https://lnkd.in/ggaEE98P [Alt text: The future of the NHS – what do the public think? Thursday 23 May 2024 10.15–11.30]

I was appalled to listen to the whole hearing. Appalled, yet I did. Hours spent watching this session won’t return but am glad I did. A glimpse, just a glimpse, into the state of healthcare in the richest nation in the world. Or rather, what remains of it.It was clear early on—this was not about medicine, science, or public health. It was performance. A nominee to be confirmed, speaking with authority but without weight. The ease with which misinformation slips into conversation. The way truth, actual and verifiable, is dismissed as an inconvenience.I am not a news person anymore. Not in the way I once was. I have stepped back, tuned out. And yet, some things cannot be ignored. The manipulation, the ignorance, the greed. A vast industry built around telling people what to eat, what to fear, how to fall sick just a little sooner. Public health once meant something. Facts were not up for debate. A health official would, at the very least, believe in health. And yet here we are.I tell myself I am grateful this is not happening in Canada. That we are protected, buffered from the rot at the core of the system down south. But am I speaking too soon? The edges blur. The same forces are at work, quieter, more polite, but no less insidious. If you listen closely, you can hear it. The language of doubt. The erosion of trust. The quiet unraveling of what we thought was safe. One thing I will leave you with—there is no doubt about the connection between what we eat and chronic illness. We are what we eat. Stay well. Stay well aware.Photo: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominee for United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, at yesterday’s hearing.#foodforthought #healthcare

Colleagues write below how health policy is becoming more pan European right now. Both member states and key stakeholders like NGOs and innovative companies should recognize the opportunity to shape the common EU health agenda bottom up🇪🇺
⚕️ 🇪🇺 Today marks a significant milestone as the newly formed European Parliament standing committee on public health, known as the “SANT” Committee, convenes for its inaugural meeting. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in December to establish a dedicated public health committee within the European Parliament, underscoring the importance of health at the EU level. As Diane Watson-Nielsen, Director & Head of Healthcare Practice Rud Pedersen Public Affairs Brussels explains: "𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 ℎ𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐸𝑈 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑦 𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑎, 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑙𝑒 𝑎 𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝐴𝑁𝑇 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑈 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑦. Today, we have published a report titled 'An analysis of Population-Based Resource Allocation for health and social care in Ireland' by Brendan Walsh and and Léonie Hill. 👥 A Population-Based Resource Allocation (PBRA) mechanism is being introduced in Ireland's healthcare system for the first time. This research examines the proposed PBRA mechanism and establishment of HSE Health Regions. 🏥 It found that implementing PBRA across the Irish healthcare system and devolving decision-making to new HSE Health Regions could significantly improve the efficient and equitable allocation of health and social care resources and advance integrated care pathways. 📊 The proposed PBRA formula uses factors like population size, age, sex, deprivation, and rurality which align closely with PBRA implemented by international peer countries. ⚠️ However, only half of HSE expenditure is proposed to be included initially, with important services such as GP care, the Nursing Home Support Scheme, and disability care excluded due to a lack of data. Additional adjustments for medical cards when allocating resources would be appropriate. Read more key findings: https://lnkd.in/eV2i-KEy Download the full report: https://lnkd.in/eQFhciSc

📢 EPHA's Review of the European Commission's Health Union Communication On May 22, the European Commission adopted a Communication on the European Health Union. This document outlines the significant progress made in EU health policy over the last five years and sets the stage for future developments under the Commissioner’s successor. 🔗Read the Communications: https://lnkd.in/eRVTfJDE Together with its members and allies, EPHA plays a crucial role in enhancing public health across Europe. We've critically examined this Communication to pinpoint synergies and areas for potential improvement, as detailed in our manifesto. 🔗Read EPHA's Manifesto: https://lnkd.in/e4dvN3vq The current Commission has made significant strides by involving #CivilSociety in consultations and initiating co-creation processes. However, there is still a need for more structured integration and sustained financial support for civil society organisations advocating for comprehensive, preventive, and equity-focused health strategies, much like EPHA. With upcoming elections, the formation of a new Parliament and Health Commissioner are imminent. EPHA has analysed the health policies of major European political groups in preparation for the next mandate. This election is a crucial moment to support political parties committed to advancing public health. 🔗Read EPHA's Review of the European Commission’s Health Union Communication: https://lnkd.in/ea8HAkFp 🔗Read EPHA's manifesto analysis here: https://lnkd.in/eZPhMJJZ EPHA stands ready to collaborate with our members and allies to ensure that the evolution of the European Health Union embodies the principles of equity and justice. Together, we can make a significant impact on the future of public health in Europe. #HealthUnion #PublicHealth #EPHA #EUHealthPolicy #EquityAndJustice #EU2024Election

Delighted that the final report of SQW's #evaluation of the Common Ambition programme for the The Health Foundation has been published this month. It explores learnings and #outcomes from four partnerships of people, families, carers, health and care professionals, VCS organisations and academics, working collaboratively in decision making to improve health and care. There are top tips and recommendations for others seeking to learn from the approaches adopted - please do take a look and let us know what you think!
📢 The Health Foundation launched the Common Ambition programme in 2020. It aimed to support partnerships between the VCS, NHS and other organisations to develop collaborative communities where people, families, carers, health care professionals and researchers could work together to improve health care. SQW’s final evaluation report of the programme has now been published by the Health Foundation. The evaluation found that the four partnerships funded by the programme successfully involved community participants in collaborative decision-making alongside health care professionals, with each adopting a different approach to collaborative decision-making.
