A new scenario-based, evidence-informed, officer-safety training course for UK police led to a 10% reduction in use of force and no increase in injuries to officers. Paper: https://lnkd.in/etGbD5pw Abstract: We aim to test the impact of a new national curriculum for public and personal safety training (PPST) developed by the College of Policing, which aims to reduce the use of force by police. We conduct a large-scale Stepped Wedge Pragmatic Controlled Trial with a single police force and 1843 participating police officers. Officers were assigned to be trained during a particular week of the year. We find statistically significant reductions in the use of force by police officers as a result of the training. These effects are a reduction of between 8.0% and 10.9% in the propensity to use force in a given week compared to the counterfactual. The effect is accompanied by a significant reduction in the likelihood of injury to civilians, and no rise in the risk of harm to officers. We conclude that the PPST curriculum appears effective at reducing use of force by police in a large scale, robust trial.

The importance of realistic scenarios in police officer training can't be overstated. The best training for officers isn't just about the textbook. Officers need hands-on training to prepare them for real-world situations they may encounter. To achieve this, the training should be as close to life as possible. Realistic scenarios are critical to reflecting the diversity of people that officers may encounter on their patrol. It offers a glimpse into situations that officers may encounter while they're on duty. The ULTIMAT blackwall system is an excellent way to simulate these situations. Officers get to practice the correct use of force in scenarios that could be potentially deadly in real life. In the end, the community benefits from officers who are well-trained and equipped to handle any situation that may come their way.

Training to become a police officer is rigorous, and experiencing OC spray is a crucial part of that preparation. It's a challenging experience, but it helps officers understand the effects firsthand and prepares them for real-life situations. Sending encouragement to Class 46 as they near the end of their training! #policetraining

🚓 Ongoing Police Department Skills Training 🚔 👮 The St. Helena Police Department participates in the State of California Commission on Police California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Perishable Skills Program (PSP), a vital part of law enforcement training designed to maintain critical officer skills that may diminish over time. This training is mandatory, following a two-year cycle, and includes several essential components to ensure officers are well-prepared for a wide range of situations: 🚔 Emergency Vehicle Operation: This involves high-level driving skills, crucial for officers who need to operate vehicles safely and effectively under emergency conditions. 🥊 Defensive Tactics: Officers practice techniques for physical confrontations, ensuring they can protect themselves and others in situations where force may be required. 🚨 Firearms and Use of Force: Regular training is provided in firearms proficiency and the appropriate use of force, preparing officers for high-stress environments where split-second decisions are necessary. In addition to these perishable skills, legislative mandates also require officers to undergo training in other important areas, such as: 🤕 First Aid: Officers are trained to provide life-saving medical assistance in emergencies. 👫 Domestic Violence Response: Specialized training helps officers appropriately handle sensitive and dangerous domestic violence situations. 📞 Tactical Communication: Effective communication techniques are taught to help de-escalate potentially violent or high-tension encounters. 👨🏫 Beyond the perishable skills, officers are also required to complete 24 hours of continuing training every two years. This additional training, which must be approved by POST, covers broader law enforcement topics and keeps officers updated on new laws, procedures, and technologies. This holistic approach ensures officers stay competent, compliant, and ready to serve the community effectively.

Despite their widespread adoption, there remains a surprising gap in the utilization of body cameras within entry-level and in-service training programs. This is a topic I dove into deeply in my dissertation. My research highlights the importance of introducing body cameras to officers in the academy before they hit the field and ensuring routine retraining during in-service programs. #LawEnforcement #Training #BodyCameras #police #drjennifermatthews #safety

HONOLULU Police Department brings in Lt. Kevin Dillon (ret) to a present L.E.A.D.S. Law Enforcement Active De-escalation Strategies Instructor Training at the Honolulu Police Department, Hawaii Oct. 1-3, 2024. The training was extremely well received, and all the officers participated actively throughout the entire presentation. They displayed high levels of enthusiasm, dedication, and professionalism throughout the training session. A review of the course evaluations revealed an overwhelming satisfaction rating from the attending members of the course. A SPECIAL THANKS to Sergeant Chris Nutter and your entire team that ensured we had everything we needed to facilitate the training. It was a true pleasure conducting training at your agency! STUDNENT FEEDBACK! KD is an excellent instructor. His use of personal stories, experiences and officer safety training successfully demonstrates his knowledge of the material in how to execute them successfully. KD has proved that this works in how we are already doing it and are all capable of doing it. The instructor was engaged, knew every slide by heart and showed data to back it. This was quite possibly the best class I took also one of the most important. Excellent presentation, K.D. provided excellent instruction. Evidence displayed regarding his knowledge and passion on the topic. The best! The instructor was awesome, animated, entertaining and very knowledgeable. K.D. is an outstanding instructor. He kept all of us engaged in a subject that we are not familiar with. Explained the material in a way that was easy to understand. Would you recommend this training to other officers? 100% of attending students rated this at the category at the highest level (excellent) and stated they would recommend this course to their peers. I feel every police officer should learn these concepts and strategies. These skills can greatly positively influence policing in a positive way. This program should be given to all officers of every rank and file. I would recommend this training to all officers, especially new officers. Not only would I recommend this class. I think it should be mandatory. Highly would recommend this program to other agencies in Hawaii 100% we hope to spread this knowledge to as many as possible
