As it begins to get colder outside, here are some tips you and your employees can follow to ensure you are all staying protected and warm on the job: ◾ Monitor your physical condition. ◾ Stay dry in the cold because moisture, e.g. from sweating, can increase the body's heat loss rate. ◾ Use PPE and keep extra clothing (including underwear) handy in case you need to change. ◾ Drink warm, sweetened fluids (no alcohol). Most importantly, you should understand the symptoms of cold stress and how to spot them so you can be proactive in preventing injury and sickness. 🚪 Understanding Routes of Entry: How Substances Enter the Body 🚪 In the workplace and beyond, understanding how substances can enter the body is key to staying safe and protecting our health. Whether you’re working with chemicals, handling hazardous materials, or just navigating everyday environments, being aware of the routes of entry can help you take precautions. Here are the four primary pathways: 1️⃣ Inhalation: Breathing in fumes, dust, gases, or vapors is one of the most common routes. Always use proper ventilation or respiratory protection when needed. 2️⃣ Absorption: Substances can pass through the skin or eyes. Wearing gloves, goggles, and protective clothing is essential when handling potentially harmful materials. 3️⃣ Ingestion: This occurs when substances are accidentally swallowed, often through contaminated hands, food, or drinks. Practice good hygiene—wash your hands thoroughly before eating or drinking! 4️⃣ Injection: Though less common, this can happen when the skin is punctured by contaminated objects, like needles or sharp tools. Use safe handling practices and proper disposal methods. #WorkplaceSafety #HealthAndSafety #RoutesOfEntry #StayProtected

It's #FunFactFriday Let's talk ticks 🕷️🕷️ While there is a government database for monitoring ticks, the best practice is still preventing contact. The best way to prevent Lyme disease is to avoid being bitten by a tick. Follow these tips when heading outside in areas where ticks can be found: Prevent: - Wear light coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants. - Tuck your shirt into your pants, and your pants into your socks. - Wear closed-toe shoes. - Use bug spray with DEET or Icaridin (always follow label directions). - Walk on cleared paths or walkways. - You can also wear permethrin-treated clothing, now available in Canada (always follow label directions). Check: - Shower or bathe as soon as possible after being outdoors. - Do a daily full body tick check on yourself, your children, your pets and your gear. - Put your clothes in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes. Industrial Hygiene: Safeguarding Against the Invisible Hazards While physical safety hazards are often top of mind, what about the less visible dangers like noise, dust, and chemical exposure? 🔊 Noise Exposure: Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can cause irreversible hearing loss. Regular noise monitoring and proper PPE can prevent this silent injury. 🌬️ Dust and Particulate Matter: Inhalation of dust and other particulates can lead to respiratory issues and other chronic conditions. Implementing proper ventilation, dust suppression systems, and air quality monitoring are key steps in protecting workers. 🧪 Chemical Hazards: Whether it's fumes, vapors, or contact with hazardous materials, continuous monitoring and strict safety protocols are essential to minimize risks. By addressing these often-overlooked hazards, companies can ensure a healthier, safer workplace, ultimately reducing liabilities and insurance premiums. Investing in industrial hygiene isn’t just about compliance; it’s about protecting your greatest asset—your people. #IndustrialHygiene #WorkplaceSafety #OSHACompliance #SafetyCulture #EmployeeHealth

Do you have employees exposed to hazardous chemicals? 🧪🧪 Understanding the risks associated with handling hazardous chemicals is critical for protecting staff. 🫁 Respiratory hazards are a common concern for workers exposed to hazardous chemicals. Inhalation of toxic fumes or particles can lead to respiratory irritation, lung damage or even respiratory failure, and remember, lung damage is irreversible! Access to proper respiratory protection, such as respirators, is crucial to minimize their exposure to these risks. Another significant risk that employees face when working with hazardous chemicals is chemical contact hazards on the hands👐. Chemicals can cause skin irritation, burns, or even more severe reactions if they come into direct contact with the skin. Appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, to prevent skin contact with hazardous substances is a must. Remember, the health and safety of your employees should always be a top priority. Let's work together to protect employees and promote a culture of safety in the workplace. Slater Safety - 01772 691000 #SafetyFirst #ChemicalSafety #ProtectEmployees #PAPR #RespiratoryProtection
