The growing push towards vehicle electrification presents both challenges and opportunities for fleet operators and utilities alike. As companies commit to electrifying their fleets, the need for robust charging infrastructure and timely grid planning becomes critical. The complexity of both transportation and electricity networks, coupled with potential lags in grid investments, could slow down this transition. However, by fostering proactive collaboration, fleets and utilities can become leaders in the electrification space. The key to successful collaboration lies in effective information sharing. Fleet operators need to develop new expertise in engaging with utilities, understanding their operations, and navigating regulatory frameworks. On the other hand, utilities must adapt their planning processes to accommodate the unique demands of electric vehicle (EV) fleets, which differ significantly from traditional building loads. By sharing detailed charging plans and energy demands, fleets can help utilities optimize grid operations and infrastructure planning, potentially avoiding costly delays. Tools like RMI’s GridUp can facilitate this collaboration by providing utilities with critical data on how grid operations will be impacted by EV charging.
