The government of British Columbia is taking a hard look at expenditures in the wake of the cancellation of the consumer carbon tax by the federal government. The province projects it will need to rebalance its budget to account for a $1.8-billion hole left by the tax. As a result, provincial programs, including the CleanBC EV rebates are under scrutiny. “That’s one of the CleanBC issues we’re reviewing and we will have more to say about that shortly,” said Adrian Dix, B.C.’s energy minister, to reporters during a scrum at the legislature earlier this week. CleanBC EV rebate Currently, B.C. offers $500 to $2,000 for plug-in hybrids, and between $1,000 to $4,000 for battery-electric and long-range plug-in hybrids. However, only those in B.C. earning $80,000 or less per year are eligible for the EV rebates. Those making $80,001 to $100,000 are eligible for a partial rebate. Any individual earning over $100,000 is not eligible for any rebates. The rebates are still available, but the government would not confirm how much of the funding remains. The leaders of both the provincial NDP and Green parties (David Eby and Jeremy Valeriote, respectively) say that tough cuts are coming. Both say they hope the EV rebates can remain. Meanwhile Conservative leader, John Rustad, was unequivocal in his opinion on the future of rebates. “When you look at the potential damage from Clean B.C. to our economy and how it will put a brake on our economy, it actually needs to be pulled out,” he said, when speaking to CBC News. Halifax launching first e-scooters, e-bikes pilot program — Starting in mid-May Bird Canada will deploy 300 e-scooters and 300 e-bikes across Halifax as part of a two-year pilot program. ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ Next month, the City of Halifax and Bird Canada will roll out 600 electric bikes and scooters in phase one of a two-year, regulated pilot program. Bird Canada, an all-Canadian company based in Port Rowan in southwest Ontario, is a last-mile electric transportation company. Since 2019, Bird has developed micro-mobility operations in more than 25 towns and cities in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Earlier this year the Regional Municipality of Halifax approved Bird Canada to be the sole provider of shared e-scooters and e-bikes in the city for a two-year term. While local shared e-scooter programs were available in the city previously, this marks the first time the government has stepped in to regulate. Initially, Bird Canada is rolling out 300 e-bikes and 300 e-scooters in Halifax. The program has the potential to increase to 1,000 vehicles depending on rider demand. The dos and don’ts Halifax introduced new bylaws and policies to help integrate Bird Canada’s vehicles seamlessly into the city’s transportation offerings. For instance, the city is creating designated drop zones and stations. When a rider abandons their vehicle outside of a designated drop zone they will continue to be charged. As well, the e-scooters and bikes are banned from sidewalks; they must use bike lanes, paths or roadways. Bird Canada claims that they are able to remotely shut off e-scooters and e-bikes that travel in no-go areas. Riders are also encouraged to wear helmets (which are provided) and only drive the vehicles when sober. The Bird app features a field sobriety test, which late-night riders must pass before activating an e-bike or e-scooter. NEW: On The Run Charging starts offering 400 kW EV charging in Canada — Earlier this month in Delta, B.C., the Parkland-owned charging network opened its first 400-kW charging station. More are coming. ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ As of April, Electric vehicle drivers in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland have a new — and markedly faster — way to charge. On The Run, a North American network of convenience stores owned and operated by Parkland Corporation, a Canadian energy and retail company, is now offering 400 kW EV charging at a new location on 120 Street in Delta, B.C. The announcement comes on the heels of a pledge from Parkland earlier this year to open 400 kW chargers. The Delta site offers three chargers — one providing a maximum 400 kW of charge and the others 180 kW. All three chargers are free for a limited-time, introductory offer. More 400 kW chargers The retail chain is already preparing to open more 400 kW EV chargers this year. Four more sites are coming online this spring in B.C. and two in Quebec. Ontario can also expect to see a handful of sites go into operation in the back half of the year. On The Run is using EV charging hardware provided by ABB Group (the A400 units at 400 kW and the Terra 184 units at 180 kW). “The A400 charger delivers an enhanced customer experience,” reads a social media post from On The Run, “with reliability and performance from a 32-inch screen to higher power charging sessions and power sharing.” Read the full story by Emma Jarratt: https://lnkd.in/gshGzKDj #ElectricVehicles #EVCharging #Canada

NEW: GM throttles down BrightDrop production at CAMI plant — The automaker is pausing work at its Ingersoll, Ont., plant at it looks to realign production amid volatile EV demand. ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ Nearly two and a half years ago, the first BrightDrop truck rolled off General Motors’ CAMI Assembly Plant line in southern Ontario. This week, the plant began layoffs. GM says it must slow production of its flagship electric delivery truck at its CAMI plant in the face of low market demand. Layoffs began April 14, in anticipation of a full shut down in May that is expected to last until late this year. “This is a crushing blow to hundreds of working families in Ingersoll and the surrounding region who depend on this plant,” said Unifor National’s national president, Lana Payne, in a press statement. GM says the CAMI plant will resume production in October, though operating only a single shift. The four to five months of downtime in the interim will be used to upgrade the line to produce its 2026 commercial EVs. The company did not respond to a request for comment from Electric Autonomy in time for publication. Payne is calling on Canadian businesses and government to step up. “The BrightDrop electric delivery van is built in Canada by Canadian workers — it’s the smart choice for Canadian business, government agencies and for our economy. Procurement and industrial policy go hand in hand.” Dealing with turmoil CAMI is the second EV-producing plant in Ontario to experience a closure this month. At the beginning of April Stellantis announced it was shutting down its Windsor Assembly Plant for two weeks. The facility — where the all-electric Dodge Charger and plug-in hybrid Chrysler Pacifica minivans are made — will reopen April 21 for a two-week run. The automaker is making no promises for what happens beyond then. Stellantis had already announced in February that it was pausing plans to begin producing the electric Jeep Compass at another Ontario plant. (Its Brampton factory has been idle and undergoing upgrades since early 2024.) In both instances Stellantis cited tariffs imposed by U.S. president Donald Trump coupled with the overall “dynamic environment” around EVs as reasons for the production disruption. “The reality is the U.S. is creating industry turmoil,” said Payne. “Trump’s short-sighted tariffs and rejection of EV technology is disrupting investment and freezing future order projections.” According to the union leader, this is bad news for North American manufacturers. “This is creating an opening for China and other foreign automakers to dominate the global EV market while the North America industry risks falling behind.” Read the full story by Emma Jarratt: https://lnkd.in/gVSWDSFD #EVManufacturing #GeneralMotors #Ontario
