Infrastructure specialists, architects, engineers and public stakeholders, I humbly think this is the way forward to reduce our activities' environmental impact : - footbridges made of timber (carbon storage), - footbridges made of prestressed structural stone (yes you need to bring the material on site with quite a few trucks but apart from that - that sounds almost low-tech to me) - footbridges made of reused steel profiles (probably the most ambitious solution due to the uncertainty of the base material, but also, maybe, the most efficient !) I think we all should be inspired by these daring propositions, and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the proposed designs as they unveil ! for me, they all stand out at great and good looking examples of the future of infrastructure!
NEWS: The footbridge of the future? We are excited to share the five shortlisted designs for our low-carbon footbridge contest. The winner, due to be announced in late Spring 2025, is designed to create a new crossing over the A127, and could form the new footbridge standard replicated across roads country-wide The shortlisted entries are from: Arup and Seán Harrington Architects COWI and Moxon Architects Ltd. Design for disassembly and the reuse of structural elements are two effective strategies for reducing embodied carbon when designing large sports facilities. Stadium 974 in Doha – designed by #sbp and Fenwick Iribarren Architects – is the first completed large-scale stadium project to be successfully designed for disassembly. Find out more about the circular economy principles that went into the design and the lessons learned from the process in the latest issue of STRUCTURE Magazine!
