Another step forward on new propulsion systems. But they all still have to meet the requirements of 14CFR Part 33 and aspects of 14CFR Parts 23 and 25 depending on which platforms they are installed. Based on vehicle weight and the number of passengers. Again control electronics will be critical. So expect a lot of focus in this area for FAA certification.

North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Stands Up EV Task Force NERC's Reliability and Security Technical Committee (RSTC) has approved the formation of the Electric Vehicle Task Force (EVTF). The EVTF's purpose is to encourage collaboration between electric utilities and representatives from the Electric Vehicles (EVs) automotive industry and builds on earlier work undertaken by the California Mobility Center EV Grid Reliability Working Group, an EV task force established by the CMC in collaboration with EnerTech Capital, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), WECC and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The goal of the NERC EVTF is to establish a common language and develop recommended utility interconnection requirements, procedures, and approaches to support the reliability of the Bulk Power System (BPS) in response to the increasing adoption of EVs observed by the ERO Enterprise. The focus of the EVTF is to address integration challenges and develop potential solutions to the engineering challenges posed by the integration of this emerging load type. This group aims to serve as an open stakeholder forum for Electric Vehicles (EVs), Charging Station Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and utilities. The forum will work towards enhancing utility knowledge of modern EV charging technology, improving the modeling of such technology, and establishing a common language to exchange impact and risk information between electric utilities and the automotive industry.   Background The EVTF is seeking volunteers to join the team with specific skills, knowledge, and technical expertise in the following areas: ·        Design of EV charging stations, charging points, or charging algorithms, ·        Design of EV discharging behavior or algorithms, ·        Electrical interface design of EVs or EV service equipment, ·        Utility programs and interconnection studies for EV equipment, ·        Other interested parties, including entities affected by adoption at-scale of EVs or EV service equipment. We’ve already shared our eVTOL Optimum Propulsion Units Analysis. Similarly, a safety analysis can be completed at the electric propulsion unit level by companies developing eVTOL aircraft and aircraft with electric and hybrid-electric propulsion units. The linked analysis is a generic version of an analysis we’ve completed for companies including Ampaire, ZeroAvia, magniX and Zunum Aero. It’s particularly relevant because it’s aligned with the recently approved AIR7130 Single Fault Rating (SFR) and can be used as a means of compliance for CS/FAR 23.2410. Joby Aviation has confirmed they implemented redundancy at the propulsion unit level. However, this redundancy isn’t strictly necessary for eVTOL aircraft because of the redundancy provided inherently by having multiple electric propulsion units. #eVTOL #safety https://lnkd.in/ewXCUXRK

🔋 The High-Stakes Challenge of Battery Safety in Electric Aircrafts 🚁 When an electric aircraft lands vertically, its batteries face one of their toughest tests. This energy-intensive maneuver generates significant heat, often pushing battery temperatures to around 60°C (140°F)—well above the optimal range. Without proper thermal management, this heat can lead to side reactions, reduced performance, or even thermal runaway—a catastrophic chain reaction. On the other hand, charging below 10°C increases the risk of lithium plating, which permanently reduces battery capacity. ⚡ We help electric aircraft companies monitor these critical factors through advanced battery testing and models. The growing use of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations poses challenges for building operators. Honeywell offers a solution to monitor the effects of EV charging on energy usage and enhance infrastructure efficiency proactively.

Why did Rolls Royce exit electric propulsion. Primarily because energy storage is not viable yet for Tecnam’s P volt project. Taking into account the most optimistic projections of slow charge cycles and the possible limitation of the maximum charge level per cycle, the real storage capacity would fall below 170Wh/kg, and only a few hundred flights would drive operators to replace the entire storage unit, with a dramatic increase in direct operating costs due to the reserves for battery replacement prices. The proliferation of aircraft with new batteries would lead to unrealistic mission profiles that would quickly degrade after a few weeks of operation, making the all-electric passenger aircraft a mere “green transition flagship” rather than a real player in the decarbonization of aviation industry. With AI server businesses scrambling for electric power, adding electric aircraft plus automotive to a already overburdened worldwide power grid is not feasible. Certainly not at this time let alone the battery technology for aircraft is not ready.
