This week I met with the government’s Clean Power Mission Control to discuss Uniper UK’s plans to support Clean Power 2030 with potential low carbon investments such as our Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power project.
There has been a lot of discussion over the past few days on Clean Power 2030, and the 95% definition that has been proposed by NESO. In the many discussions I have had with different government teams and NESO on this topic, it has always been clear that unabated gas will play a critical role in both ensuring security of supply, and in delivering a cost-effective overall solution for decarbonisation.
New low-carbon power generation must be developed at pace if we are to meet the Clean Power 2030 goal - and this was the focus of our discussion; but it is also essential to ensure GB’s ageing fleet of gas-fired plants can be maintained and made even more flexible so they can run less often, but still provide vital support to keep the lights on.
