My advice to any contractor/freelancer... ...Build your network. Your network isn't how many Linkedin connections you have, it should be a curated list of contacts that you know would hire you if they have projects that need additional support. It should be a network that you can send a simple message to you, a network that would actually respond, even a simple yes or no is vital as a contractor. This network should also be a network where you can share "intel". Sharing with each other information about projects that are happening, which companies are getting investment and what events you should go to, to meet prospective hiring companies. Spreading the risk, and creating multiple routes in finding a contract gig is one of the most important things to do as a contractor. What other advice would you share to a contractor/freelancer?

I see it as one of the most underrated business skills going Knowing what you don't know Then hiring or outsourcing to someone who does know I don't employ anyone over summer. When I set the business up I did it in a way that I wouldn't need anyone on a permanent basis. An open letter for clients from "freelancers": 1- Just because you've invested in our services doesn't mean you own our time. We're committed to delivering quality work, but we have other clients and personal lives too. 2- We're not robots. Expecting us to be available at midnight or during weekends is unreasonable. 3- While we're open to reasonable revisions, expecting us to accommodate every minor change in instalments is not feasible. 4- As you have your business hours, we have ours too. Let's respect each other's time. 5- As you were timely clearing the invoices during the project, we need that same smooth clearance even when the contract ends. 6- We don't appreciate being ghosted either. If you disappear for months and then suddenly reappear expecting to continue services, only to disappear again. We are sorry. 7- We put our hearts and souls into every word we write.
