What we learned from #RAILTALKS15 ... it's all about execution. Thanks again for highlighting this plain and simple truth Christian Velbinger Your personal journey is the best example, how things can unfold, when you look for opportunities instead of risks and when you always ask yourself "HOW it can be done" instead of "IF it can be done". Well ... I am known to be bold and looking back at more than 18 years of collaboration with key decision makers in European Rail ... Yes it unfortunately is true in my opinion, that probably 95% of the acting stakeholders mostly ask the second question rather than the first. If you consider yourself to be one of the remaining 5% .. please share your story and convince the other 95%, that we need more execution and need to stop finding excuses (this years favourite ... "Trassenpreisentwicklung") but need to focus on improving efficiency and our product. Today, BIC announced our Q1 earnings. Skellefteå kommun and Region Västerbotten again being not only imaginative but nimble in their thinking in the wake of the Northvolt crisis. Developing an education, research, and innovation cluster in Skellefteå around advanced battery manufacturing and electrification would bring transformative benefits. It would boost the local economy by creating jobs across sectors, driving tax revenue, and attracting investments and global partnerships. The cluster would further enhance Skellefteå’s international reputation, consolidating it as a leader in battery technology and sustainable innovation. Local education and upskilling opportunities would expand, equipping residents with specialised skills and creating career paths for people without having to leave the region. This would also attract - and retain - international talent, fostering diversity and population growth. Overall, this initiative would make Skellefteå a globally competitive, vibrant hub of economic, social, and technological progress. This idea may have been born out of a crisis but it makes total sense.

'We had to conduct a revolution. In people on the board, the management, staff and the whole understanding of what the future held and what the past wouldn't deliver in those business units.' Documenting an organisation's history should be about more than just listing achievements. It should also provide an insight into its ethos, mission and purpose, as well as the difficult moments and challenges it has faced. Sometimes, blood gets spilled. One of the most instructive parts of working on the book 'IOOF to Insignia Financial' was speaking to former directors and executives about their time with the business. What struck me was the personal and emotional involvement many had with the company, for better or worse. During more than one interview I conducted, interviewees were visibly moved while recounting a specific episode of their tenure. The experience shook some of my preconceptions about the emotional engagement of leaders with their organisations. It also emphasised to me the importance of having an informed, sensitive and intelligent board that could support but also, when needed, counter the directives and passions of the CEO and management. As anyone with even a passing interest in business knows, the relationship between a board and the executive can be a delicate pendulum. When that relationship is out of whack, an organisation can quickly run adrift and find itself in difficult situations. Culture is often set top down.
