Powering Ahead │ January Highlights from Sizewell C

As we step into 2025, we're excited to share our key highlights from January in our new Powering Ahead report. From supporting new initiatives to celebrating key milestones, this month's achievements set the pace for the year ahead.

🪙 Unearthing History on Site

At the start of the year we were thrilled to be featured on BBC’s Digging for Britain, showcasing remarkable archaeological discoveries from the Sizewell C site. As part of the archaeology stage of construction, and working with Oxford and Cotswold Archeology, the team has spent the past nine months uncovering significant finds, including traces of Early Anglo-Saxon structures, Roman salterns, and - most excitingly - a hoard of over 300 silver coins.

These discoveries not only deepen our understanding of Suffolk’s rich history but also ensure its preservation as we move forward with the project, demonstrating our commitment to doing construction right.

🎉 Reflecting on Our First Year of Construction

On 15 January, we marked one year since the triggering of the Development Consent Order (DCO), officially launching Sizewell C’s construction phase.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve engaged nearly 300 UK suppliers with £2.5 billion in contracts, including over £100 million awarded to local businesses. And this is just the beginning! As we move forward, we’re set to create 70,000 jobs and ensure 70% of Sizewell C’s construction costs are spent with UK businesses, driving growth and strengthening the nation’s energy future.

⚓️ Supporting Sutton Hoo’s Rebirth - another historical gem!

We announced Sizewell C's £20,000 contribution to the Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company Corporate Sponsorship Scheme. This project aims raise funds to reconstruct an 88-foot Anglo-Saxon ship, believed to have belonged to King Raedwald, discovered near Woodbridge in Suffolk.

Bringing together volunteers and experts, this initiative is set to recreate a remarkable piece of history, with plans to launch the vessel on the River Deben in 2026. At Sizewell C, supporting local projects is key to celebrating the area's rich heritage and building a lasting legacy in Suffolk - ensuring that, as we construct the energy future in Suffolk, we also honour the past.

☕️ Supporting the Launch of Employment Councils and Combat2Coffee

We welcomed the launch of the Ministry of Justice UK's Employment Councils initiative which aims to unite probation services, prisons, and businesses to create meaningful opportunities for ex-offenders. We recognise the value of integrating ex-offenders into the workforce, helping individuals rebuild their lives while addressing the UK’s labour shortages.

Julia Pyke, our Joint Managing Director says:

💬 “The launch of Employment Councils is a great initiative that we fully support. Sizewell C will create around 70,000 jobs across Britain, and we are already providing opportunities for people in Suffolk who may otherwise face barriers to employment.”

Last year, we proudly provided Combat2Coffee with their first permanent coffee shop at our site in Leiston. Combat2Coffee is on a mission to support veterans, ex-uniformed personnel, and ex-offenders by selling premium coffee and reinvesting profits into outreach programmes. By supporting projects like Combat2Coffee, we’re proud to strengthen initiatives in the local community and help those who may face barriers to entering the workforce.

🤝 Launching the Sizewell C Skills Charter

We launched our new Skills Charter, which is essential to developing a skilled and inclusive workforce for the project and the long-term benefit of the East of England. By partnering with CITB, ECITB, and local authorities, including Suffolk County Council (SCC) and East Suffolk Council (ESC), the Skills Charter creates pathways for underrepresented groups, re-skills workers, and establishes centres of excellence for nuclear sector training in Suffolk.

⚛️ Energy Security and Net Zero Committee Site Visit

We welcomed members of the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee to our site for a tour. The committee included Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the Committee, Claire Young MP, Luke Murphy MP, and Wera Hobhouse MP, who all had the opportunity to see firsthand the progress we’re making at Sizewell C.

Bill Esterson 🎥, Chair of the Committee, said:

"The most exciting thing about Sizewell C is the scale of the project, the way it’s been brought together, and how it’s been set up to learn from the success of Hinkley Point C and translate that directly into success in East Anglia."

We thank the Committee for taking the time to visit us on-site and for their interest in how Sizewell C is helping to build a secure, zero-carbon, and sustainable energy future for Britain!

🌟 Sizewell C Community Fund Update

We announced the second round of Sizewell C Community Fund grants, totalling £1.1M, to local charities and not-for-profit groups. Eleven organisations received funding from the £23M Sizewell C Community Fund.

One of the recipients, Home-Start Suffolk, will receive £201,881 over two years to continue providing free, practical, and emotional support to parents and carers through their network of over 280 volunteers. This funding ensures that no barriers prevent individuals from accessing these vital services.

💡 #NuclearWeek in Parliament 2025

In the final week of January, Parliament was bustling with activity as part of #NuclearWeek. This annual event brings together the UK nuclear industry, government representatives, and other stakeholders to discuss the vital role of nuclear energy in the country's energy security, climate goals, and economy.

The previous week saw Ed Miliband 🎥, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, in Leiston (the home of Sizewell C) sharing an inspiring vision for the future of Sizewell C and East Anglia, saying:

"This area is going to lead our country when it comes to the clean energy of the future".

We've welcomed further endorsements for Sizewell C from MPs including Jack Abbott 🎥, the MP for Ipswich, and Lord Hunt 🎥, Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Furthermore, we hosted a roundtable discussion in partnership with Great British Nuclear, with politicians such as Lord Hunt, industry leaders, and academics in the room.

A number of our apprentices joined the Skills and Apprenticeship Fair, hosted by Liz Saville Roberts MP, to showcase the opportunities created by the project. Sizewell C is already making a difference - 60 apprentices have joined us this year alone, and we’re set to train over 1,500 apprentices during construction, with at least 540 from Suffolk, where the project is based.

This is an economic joke and an environmental waste of time.

This 'propaganda' is detached from the reality of a project that is way too expensive, has serious funding problems (EDF's auditors have cautioned against the risk), and which has been described by Citizens Advice as being 'poor value for money'. The Sizewell C project does not appear to stack up against more affordable renewable strategies, which have much shorter construction time spans. Sizewell C has a high risk of being delayed or cancelled altogether. This is even more relevant considering the state of the National Debt, interest on that debt and the current gloomy outlook for the UK economy. Hinkley Point C is forecast to cost £46 billion. The government is not yet being upfront about the true cost of Sizewell C - which has been reported to be around £40 billion with a controversial and dubious proposed funding model which puts consumers at risk. Is this very expensive and highly risky project affordable and the best allocation of our country's scarce resources?

I've recently seen an announcement that the estimated cost has doubled - a cool £20 billion pounds extra - which will obviously feed through into expensive electricity for a generation. How would you react if that were work on your house ? Not a confidence builder..And what are the alternatives - £40 billion spent on improving our decrepit housing stock, perhaps.
