American Red Cross Los Angeles Region reposted this
Thanks to volunteers like Ernie Montelongo, patients are getting the lifesaving blood they need — by ground and by air. "It’s exciting and meaningful," he said. As a 30-year veteran of the water treatment industry, Ernie is no stranger to answering the call of duty at any time of day. Once he retired, he wanted to give his time and give back. That's when he found the Red Cross. Ernie is a blood transportation specialist with the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region. He delivers blood products across several counties in a Red Cross van to hospitals, clinics and even helipads. When delivering boxes of blood products to helipads, he helps load helicopters rushing to trauma scenes or transporting critically ill patients. Ernie keeps a cheerful attitude without losing sight of the essential, emergency work he is doing. He is met with that same positivity wherever he goes. “All the people in the labs are really nice, the directors and technicians and they’re always thanking you for volunteering,” Ernie said. You can be called to serve when moments matter like Ernie — anytime, anywhere. Our blood transportation specialists have the option to take on-demand shifts and deliver for hospitals that need blood within 30 minutes.
