Thanks to volunteers like Ernie Montelongo, patients are getting the lifesaving blood they need — by ground and by air. "It’s exciting and meaningful," he said. As a 30-year veteran of the water treatment industry, Ernie is no stranger to answering the call of duty at any time of day. Once he retired, he wanted to give his time and give back. That's when he found the Red Cross. Ernie is a blood transportation specialist with the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region. He delivers blood products across several counties in a Red Cross van to hospitals, clinics and even helipads. When delivering boxes of blood products to helipads, he helps load helicopters rushing to trauma scenes or transporting critically ill patients. Ernie keeps a cheerful attitude without losing sight of the essential, emergency work he is doing. He is met with that same positivity wherever he goes. “All the people in the labs are really nice, the directors and technicians and they’re always thanking you for volunteering,” Ernie said. You can be called to serve when moments matter like Ernie — anytime, anywhere. Our blood transportation specialists have the option to take on-demand shifts and deliver for hospitals that need blood within 30 minutes. • 💉🩸 From Donation to Lifesaving Action 🚁 When you donate blood at the Red Cross, it might just end up saving a life in the sky. After pickup from our Pomona center, Red Cross volunteers deliver blood to Mercy Air bases—where flight nurses like Jon Shoemaker and his crew stock their helicopters for emergencies across So Cal and beyond. Thanks to this powerful partnership, critically injured patients can receive blood transfusions on the scene or in transport—whether that’s a highway crash or an emergency call from Catalina Island. It’s hospital-level care, delivered at 3,000 feet. 🩸 Your donation goes further than you think. One gallon. It’s a significant blood donation milestone for Marilyn Jimenez considering she wasn’t encouraged to donate growing up. Marilyn was born in Mexico and grew up between there and the U.S. She says that for Mexicans, there isn’t a strong culture of proactively donating blood unless a family member, neighbor or acquaintance had a specific need. That mindset personally changed for Marilyn once she began working at the American Red Cross. Her awareness of the need for blood nationwide grew, and she quickly learned the profound impact that blood donations can have on a patient in need. “I realized that blood is needed long before a person goes into surgery or has an accident,” Marilyn said. “Also, the need for blood is greater than the number of people who donate.” She is one of the nearly 60% of Latinos who have O positive blood, the most transfused blood type and often in low supply. “Whenever I talk about this topic, people are always like, ‘Wow!’” Marilyn said. “I believe that many Latinos don’t realize the important role they play in maintaining the blood supply. It’s key for people to know that the blood we’re collecting can help save the lives of other Latinos.” Marilyn has no plans to stop donating blood. In fact, she finds motivation to continue through the updates she receives on where her blood donation goes. “Last year, I donated platelets, and three units were distributed to three different hospitals. It was really cool to see that one donation helped three different people.”
