RBB's Nuno Alvim is delighted to be participating in a panel discussion that will focus on the Digital Markets Act (DMA) from the Member State perspective at this upcoming European Competition Lawyers Association (ECLA).
The DMA imposes a whole host of new and complex regulatory obligations on designated Gatekeepers. The panel will discuss some potential implications at the Member State level, including how the European Commission will measure compliance with and detect infringements of the DMA and what role (if any) the Member States will play in that; the potential interplay between the DMA and Article 22 TFEU; the possibility of parallel investigations under national law in light of bpost and Nordzucker; and the scope for private enforcement of the DMA in the national courts.

Cybercrime Trends: A Tale of Two Nations 🇮🇳🇩🇪
In the realm of cybersecurity, vigilance is key. Recent data reveals intriguing insights into cybercrime landscapes in both India and Germany.
🇮🇳 India: Cybercrime complaints surged by 61% in 2023, reflecting a significant challenge. However, proactive measures like the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) and the '1930' financial cyber fraud helpline saved Rs 1,127 crore, showcasing the power of timely intervention. Despite facing delays in restitution, efforts are underway to streamline processes, with legal frameworks evolving to expedite recovery. Moreover, international cooperation is paramount, with 40-50% of complaints involving actors from abroad, particularly China, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
🇩🇪 Germany: The threat level remains high, with cybercrimes by foreign perpetrators rising by 28% in 2023, continuing a concerning trend. Notably, Russian hackers have been implicated in attacks, underscoring the severity of the situation. However, Germany stands firm in its resolve to protect democracy and support global cybersecurity efforts.
Both nations are leveraging advanced techniques and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and organizations to combat cyber threats. By fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness and implementing robust defense mechanisms, India and Germany are poised to navigate the digital landscape with resilience and determination.

Many new and exciting features are planned for BIOFACH 2025, including a revamped exhibition hall concept. We asked Dominik Dietz, current Exhibition Director for BIOFACH, what visitors and exhibitors can expect in Nuremberg from 11 to 14 February 2025 and what the new hall configuration will look like. 👇

🇮🇳🇩🇪 Germany's partner of the future is India - read this and join if you want to shape the collaboration between the two countries 💥
🇩🇪 Over the past five years, the number of Indian workers in Germany has tripled to around 116,000, primarily in high-demand sectors, esp. Tech and Healthcare. This influx is alleviating the skills shortage and is expected to grow further with the migration agreement between India and Germany started by Ampel Regierung last year.
🇮🇳 In the last decade, migration from India has significantly increased, placing India as the 5th highest net migration source (40.5k+) to Germany, surpassing EU countries like Poland and Romania.
📊 As of end of 2023, approximately ~240k Indian nationals were residing in Germany, with states like Berlin hosting a sizable Indian community, mainly comprising students and professionals. Asylum applications from India remain minimal, highlighting the migration's focus on education and employment opportunities.
🌏 Meanwhile, reflecting on India's impactful leadership during the G20 Summit, German politicians across parties emphasize India's rightful place at the global table and the resonance of its influence worldwide. A success that made Biden, Scholz, and Macron realise that India is a global player that has potential to be the main partner for a liberal world supporting a sustainable future.
☀️ The CCPI - Climate Change Performance Index ranks India on #7 as highest ranking G20 nation, before Germany (#14), France (#37), and the US (#57) evaluating its ambition to protect the climate.
💪🏾 India finally got a seat at the big table. India has gained power and it will continue to do so.
It's maybe more important than ever to strengthen Indo-German relations. I am happy to have been part of the Indo-German Young Leaders Forum and to have been contributing to it since its inception in 2016.
The team held conferences in Berlin and New Delhi in 2017, 2018, and 2019 pre-pandemic and was even mentioned as the only non-governmental initiative fostering Indo-German collaboration among young professionals in the joint statement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2017!
The forum successfully re-established itself post pandemic with a conference in Bengaluru in 2023 with amazing partners like Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India and Bosch India. Together with Global Bridges, the team will probably organise the largest and most exciting conference till date.
🔥 It will take place in Berlin from September 12-15! 🔥
The application window for the next conference is closing next weekend! Needless to say, I think it's a fantastic and enriching experience to be part of the conference and a growing support base for the Indo-German community which is willing to make sure both countries learn from each other as much as possible.

I will be pleased to chair the session on “Power, (im)mobility and accessibility: politicizing transport”.
We will focus on three topics:
- What are the main challenges of accessibility?
- How do questions of scale (national, regional, local) affect the interactions between accessibility, mobility, and regional/urban planning?
- In what ways do current planning and policy-making processes include the needs voiced by citizens?
Keen to be part of TOD-IS-RUR Network!
After a busy week spent attending two conferences, (Near Surface EAGE in Helsinki and the IAH 2024 World Groundwater Congress in Davos), I had the following realization when reviewing my conference contacts and talk notes. In these large global conferences with experts from around the world, it is difficult to even fit in half of the presentations/talks you might want to see, plus meet with presenters, let alone be able to attend all conferences of interest.
Therefore, over the next week or so, I am going to share some of the experiences/talks/discussions that I found intriguing, thought provoking or out of my depth and which I would like to learn more of from these two great events. This way if you also missed the talks/conference or have a similar interest, perhaps these may also be of interest, spark an idea or start a discussion. (* I do warn however, that there will be some shameless plugs from time to time in the following posts). Stim-u-late-r! Ryan
