Yesterday, a student asked me a question that didn’t make me feel old at all…. “Andy, do you find it scary that the people you’ll be enrolling in September weren’t even born when you started lecturing?” You can always rely on students to say the nicest things! But honestly? Yes, I do find it a little scary! Looking back, it’s been an incredible journey—filled with ups, downs, and plenty of laughs along the way. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my job. I’m passionate about inspiring young creatives to achieve their full potential, and it’s been an absolute privilege to play a part in so many journeys. That said, I think the role of an educator has become more challenging in recent years. But I’m encouraged by the renewed focus on pedagogy and the passion for teaching that we’re embracing as a college. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do and how impactful great teaching can be. Looking ahead, what will the next 15 years bring? If I had a crystal ball, I’d predict a continued focus on student wellbeing—it’s never been more important. From a teaching perspective, I believe industry needs will increasingly prioritise creative problem-solving, not simply knowing the answers but knowing how to ask the right questions. Here’s to the next chapter and the opportunity to keep growing, learning, and inspiring the next generation of creatives.

With a surge in investments to enhance teacher development across the Asia-Pacific, it is important to identify the elements that foster meaningful engagement in professional growth initiatives. Today, ACER researchers Debbie Wong and Elizabeth Cassity join experts from Catalpa International and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a special symposium at the OCIES 52nd Annual Conference in Melbourne. Drawing on work in the region, including ACER’s research on the impact of DFAT’s investments on teaching quality and student learning, the panel will discuss future strategies for maximising the quality and impact of teacher professional learning investments.
