Teacher Appreciation Post #4: Teachers as Learners Today let's celebrate teachers for their unwavering commitment to continuous learning and innovation. Teaching is not static; it's a dynamic craft that evolves with each passing day, and it's the teachers who embrace this ethos of lifelong learning who truly shine. Consider the new reading research that has emerged in recent years. As new research sheds light on the science of reading, teachers are reimagining their approaches to literacy instruction, incorporating evidence-based practices and strategies that have the potential to transform the way we teach reading. But here's the thing: the field of education is vast and complex, and there's still so much we don't know. From the neuroscience of learning to the psychology of motivation, there's a wealth of knowledge waiting to be uncovered. And it's the teachers who eagerly engage with this research, who seek out new insights and perspectives, who are best positioned to drive positive change in their classrooms and beyond. Moreover, teaching is as much an art as it is a science. It's about finding the delicate balance between theory and practice, between structure and creativity. It's about knowing when to stick to the tried-and-true methods and when to venture into uncharted territory in search of new approaches and innovations. What sets great teachers apart is their willingness to embrace this spirit of exploration and discovery. They're the ones who attend professional development workshops, engage in collaborative inquiry with colleagues, and experiment with new ideas and strategies in their classrooms. They're the ones who understand that teaching is not just a job; it's a calling—a lifelong journey of growth and discovery. So, as we honor teachers this week, let's not only celebrate their expertise and professionalism but also their insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge. To all the teachers who continually seek to deepen their understanding of the art and science of teaching: thank you. Your commitment to learning, your openness to innovation, and your dedication to your craft inspire us all. You are the true pioneers of education, shaping the future with wisdom, creativity, and boundless enthusiasm.

There is no single time when teachers universally become "good" at their jobs. Teaching is a complex and multifaceted profession that requires ongoing learning and development. Several factors influence when a teacher may start to become proficient: *Experience - Generally, teachers improve with more years of classroom experience. The first few years are often the most challenging as teachers develop their instructional skills and classroom management. *Continuing education - Teachers who actively engage in professional development, take courses, and seek feedback from colleagues and administrators tend to improve more quickly. *Mentorship - Early-career teachers who receive guidance and support from experienced, skilled mentors can accelerate their growth. *Reflection and adaptation - Teachers who regularly reflect on their practice and make changes based on student needs and outcomes tend to become more effective over time. *Innate teaching ability - Some individuals have a natural aptitude for teaching that allows them to become skilled practitioners more rapidly, though consistent effort is still required. On average, research suggests it can take 3-5 years for a new teacher to become fully competent in the profession. However, the timeline can vary significantly based on the individual teacher and their specific circumstances. The most important factor is a teacher's ongoing commitment to professional growth and development. https://lnkd.in/gfsz33xE #emotionintoart #motivation #motivational #motivationalspeaker #motivationalspeaking

In the realm of education, the role of a teacher extends far beyond mere knowledge transfer. Great teachers are distinguished not just by their command of subject matter but by their ability to create an environment conducive to overall learning and personal growth. The six key qualities that revered teachers are admired for are—Accessibility, Adaptability, Approachability, Authenticity, Articulation, and Affection. 💡Accessibility is the cornerstone of effective teaching. A teacher who is accessible ensures that students can reach out for help and support whenever needed. This does not merely refer to physical presence but also to being available in terms of time, resources, and emotional support. It fosters a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel valued and heard, facilitating better academic performance and personal confidence. 🧠Adaptability is another crucial trait. The educational landscape is dynamic, with diverse learning styles and evolving challenges. A great teacher must adapt to these changes, whether they involve integrating new technologies, adjusting teaching methods to accommodate different learning needs, or responding to unexpected classroom dynamics. 💡Approachability builds a bridge between students and teachers. When teachers are approachable, they create an atmosphere of trust and openness that encourages a collaborative learning environment. Students are more likely to engage in meaningful discussions, seek guidance, and express their concerns when they feel that their teacher is receptive and non-judgmental. 🧠Authenticity is integral to establishing credibility and respect. An authentic teacher is genuine and transparent in their interactions, reflecting their true selves rather than conforming to an idealized image. Authenticity helps build trust, as students are more likely to connect with a teacher who demonstrates sincerity and integrity. 💡Articulation refers to the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. A teacher’s capacity to explain complex concepts in an easily understandable way is crucial for student comprehension. Effective articulation involves not only the clarity of speech but also the use of appropriate examples, analogies, and explanations that resonate with students. 🧠Affection might seem less tangible, but it is equally important. Affection expressed through care, empathy, and encouragement helps create a nurturing learning environment. When teachers show genuine concern for their students’ well-being and celebrate their successes. It fosters a sense of belonging and motivation, which in turn makes the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable. So remember these SIX BIG A's. Happy Teacher's Day to all!!! May your day be filled with appreciation and recognition!

As 2024 ends, I reflect on the lessons and experiences that have shaped my year and will be my tools for 2025. This year was particularly special as I challenged myself, stepping out of my comfort zone as an early years teacher for over 20 years and transitioning to teaching upper primary. The initial anxiety of this shift soon turned into a love for learning new concepts to teach my students. This experience reminded me of the essence of teaching—it’s not about simply having curriculum knowledge or covering the syllabus; it’s about breaking down concepts into smaller, accessible steps so every student can connect with and internalize the learning. This transition reignited my passion for ensuring that learning is meaningful and transformative for each child. Here are some of the key highlights from my journey this past year: Inspired by Trevor MacKenzie’s Questioning routines, I introduced the question pencil in two units this year. Initially, it helped students organize their inquiries, but the real impact came when we revisited the answers after the second unit. It was transformative to watch students reflect on the information they gathered and recognize the importance of their question stems. Thanks to Tonya Gilchrist’s sessions on the 3 Essential Keys and Myths of Inquiry, I understood what inquiry looks like in the classroom. These sessions not only strengthened my practice but also equipped me to explain the inquiry process to colleagues who were unfamiliar with it. This clarity has enhanced my ability to collaborate and advocate for inquiry-based learning. This year, I understood the value of not just student feedback but student feedback to teachers. Hearing reflections like “I enjoyed this lesson,” “I loved learning this,” or even witnessing a shift from “I don’t get it” to “Wow, this is easy” has been a source of immense motivation. These small but powerful affirmations reinforced my belief in the impact of my teaching and fueled my confidence to keep growing. One of my personal goals for 2025 is to maintain a teacher journal. While I’ve always kept a daily reflection journal, this new journal will focus on the small victories we experience in the classroom that are often overshadowed. I hope this practice will remind me to celebrate the everyday successes that make teaching so rewarding. As I set my goals for 2025, I’m excited to continue embracing challenges, deepening my understanding of inquiry, and inspiring my students. Here’s to another year of growth and collaboration! #teacherlife #teachergoals #inquiryteacher
