The Olympic medal count system can be seen as #insane and #unfair due to several reasons. Firstly, it doesn't account for the varying levels of difficulty and competitiveness across different sports. For instance, #swimming and #gymnastics have numerous events, offering more medal opportunities, while sports like #rugby and #baseball have very few. This disparity can unfairly skew the medal tally in favor of countries excelling in sports with multiple events. Additionally, sports like #athletics and #football, with higher global participation, often see stiffer competition, making medals harder to come by compared to niche sports like #equestrian. The system also fails to recognize the individual brilliance required in sports with fewer events, like marathon running. Furthermore, team sports like basketball contribute only a single medal despite the collective effort involved. The medal count also overlooks the different investment levels and resources available to athletes from various countries. This system can therefore misrepresent a country's overall athletic capability and investment in sports development. #Olympics #MedalCount #FairPlay #AthleteDiversity #SportsEquality #CompetitionLevels #GlobalParticipation #TeamSports #AthleticInvestment #OlympicChallenges

The Olympic program has come a long way since its inception in 1896. Croquet and tug-of-war were once Olympic sports, with croquet making its only appearance in 1900 and tug-of-war returning five more times until 1920. As the world changes, so does the Olympic program. This year, two sports make their Olympic debuts, while several others are making a comeback. Host countries can now nominate one-off events that "enhance the popularity of the Games," ensuring that the program remains fresh and exciting. Celebrate the diversity and evolution of the Olympic program, and keep cheering on your favorite athletes as they strive to be faster, higher, stronger, and yes, even floatier.🏅🌊 #olympics #newsport #oldsport #staypositive #happylaw

The results are in! n=40,496 of our members read our newsletter over the last 3 weeks, n=37,391 in AU and n=3,105 in NZ. Not bad at all! At the end, we ask them to answer a few questions that have been topical for that quarter. This time it was all about Olympics. Olympics may seem like a distant memory by now, but we needed that time to get our responses in- and who doesn’t want to know about the Olympics…so here they are! Astoundingly, our love for the Olympics (and how much we watched) are within 1% the same in AU and NZ! --> 💕 63% love or like the Olympics in both countries. Overall, 3 water 🌊 sports made it into the top 5 on what we’re most interested in watching, while contact sports, handball and Golf attracted least interest. The biggest discrepancies in interest between the two countries are that Australia are much more interested in: --> Swimming (51% vs 38% NZ) and --> Skateboarding (22% vs 12% NZ) New Zealanders, however, are much more interested in: --> Rugby 7s (32% vs 12% AU) and --> Rowing (35% vs 17% AU). Looks like we were all pretty excited about the Olympics, so hope the next 4 years go quickly! ⌛

The USA Olympic Trials for swimming finished yesterday (June 15-23). What an event to take part in. It's known as The Meet of Tears for a reason. The years of training and preparation. The burden of expectation, stress, and fear of failure. The joy of qualifying and the despair of missing out. And then you see the photo of the pool with the crowd right there! Check out this post from Mel Stewart OLY. The article gives great insight into the event. #performance #mindset #swimming
Confession. Yes, I’ve won Olympic gold, but I am also a member of the “Olympic Trials 3rd Place Club” - For the non-swimming fans, if you get 3rd at U.S. Olympic Trials, you stay home and watch the Olympics on TV. And it is a very tough Olympics to watch when you were so close to making the team. That is why we also call Olympic Trials “The Meet of Tears”

Catapult River Jumping is yet to be an Olympic event. But here are some Little-Known Olympic Events The Olympics have a rich history filled with unusual and forgotten sports. Here are a few: Discontinued Events Live Pigeon Shooting: This gruesome event involved shooting live pigeons. Thankfully, it was only held once in 1900. Running Deer Shooting: Competitors shot at moving targets that resembled deer. Tug-of-War: While it might seem simple, it was an Olympic sport for several decades. Lesser-Known Modern Events Canoe Sprint: While canoeing is known, the intricacies of sprint events often go unnoticed. Badminton: Despite its popularity, it was only added to the Olympic program 1992. Modern Pentathlon: This event combines shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and running. Ancient and Obscure Pankration: A brutal combination of boxing and wrestling with few rules. Hot Air Ballooning: Yes, it was once an Olympic sport. #olympics

Share your favorite rebranding in the comments 😉 Note: Volleyball World isn’t the new name of Fédération Internationale de Volleyball - FIVB—it’s a joint venture with CVC, and the FIVB brand still exists.

Talent Spotlight: Stefan Bojic Talent: Freestyle Tennis As a lifelong tennis player, Stefan Bojic (@stef_bojic) always envisioned blending creativity with the sport he loved. Growing up in Novi Sad, Serbia, the concept of freestyle tennis had been brewing in his mind for years. However, it wasn’t until his move to New York City for university that this idea began to take shape. “I think it evolves with who we are,” Stefan reflects. “At the time, I was exploring filmmaking, so I approached freestyle tennis as my first real project. I never imagined it would grow this much.” With a deep understanding of technique and a creative vision, Stefan began crafting a unique style of play, blending technical skills with artistry. Drawing inspiration from pioneers in alternative sports like Rodney Mullen in skateboarding, Stefan committed himself to rigorous daily practice. “You just go out and do it for two hours every day. At first, you don’t know what to do, so you have to figure it out. That’s where nurturing the person behind the craft becomes so important,” he shares. Through relentless dedication, Stefan pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with a racket and ball, mastering tricks that challenge the conventional way of playing the sport. Beyond perfecting his skills, he had to navigate the complexities of building a career in a niche field. “It’s crucial to keep perspective and measure yourself against your own progress,” he says. “That’s how you know you’re moving forward.” As a trailblazer in freestyle tennis, @stef_bojic’s journey is one of innovation and a relentless drive to reimagine what’s possible. Stefan’s unique approach inspires athletes and creatives alike, proving that passion and determination can carve out paths that are entirely new. #thegarden #freestyletennis #athletes #inspirational #innovative #tennislife #passion
