#Iowa is getting federal help to eliminate lead water pipes in the state. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is working with local water agencies, planning where to prioritize funds. As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, cities and towns in Iowa are reducing the number of dangerous lead water lines. The Iowa Environmental Council's Director of Climate Initiatives Cody Smith, M.P.A. said even homes built as recently as 1988 are connected to the local water utility with lead lines - which leaves people at risk, even in Iowa's big cities like Des Moines and Council Bluffs. "Particularly with the most vulnerable groups, such as unborn babies or young children, they have extreme and outsize risk related to exposure to lead through lead service lines," said Smith. "That can cause higher levels of lead in the blood and lead to developmental issues for children." The State's Revolving Fund, which is the primary source for water infrastructure updates, has received more than $620 million as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The IEC says more than 700 communities have benefited so far. Beyond replacing lead pipes and updating water system infrastructure, Smith said Iowa could also benefit from help with what are known as non-point source projects. "Which is runoff from agricultural fields and from livestock operations that lead to nutrient pollution in source water," said Smith. "And source water is water that's used for drinking water somewhere in the state." Smith said those strategies can help farmers and local utilities reduce nitrates and other pollutants in the soil. The #Biden administration has a goal of replacing all lead water service lines in the U.S. by 2031.

@Texas lawmakers approved a billion-dollar investment in #water #infrastructure and Texas voters, as they always have, ratified that decision. The thing is that the Clean Watersheds Needs Survey conducted by the federal Environmental Protection agency says that in total, US infrastructure #investment (not just Texas) needs are over $1 trillion over the next 20 years. The combination of #aging #facilities and #climate #change has impacted #water, #wastewater, #nonpoint source #pollution, #decentralized wastewater and #stormwater. The Infrastructure Investment Act provided $12 billion to revolving funds and $1 billion for emerging #contaminants but that is just a drop in the bucket of critical funding. EPA qualifies their reports by noting that they are probably underestimates because of data and reporting challenges and lack of long-term planning and exclusion of tribal wastewater needs. There are challenges ahead for those of us working in this infrastructure sector failure simply isn’t an option. #CleanWatershedsNeedsSurvey Carlos Rubinstein Texas City Management Association Texas Association of Counties Texas Rural Water Association (TRWA) Texas Water Utilities Association https://lnkd.in/eb-AXNVZ

💧🇺🇸🪈 The #Lead and #Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) will also require more rigorous testing of drinking water and a lower threshold requiring communities to take action to protect people from lead exposure in water. In addition, the final rule improves communication within communities so that families are better informed about the risk of lead in drinking water, the location of lead pipes, and plans for replacing them. This final rule has been a priority for the #Biden US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as it aims to see every lead pipe in the country replaced within a decade. #water #waterscarcity #watercrisis #tech #watertech #startup #innovation #future #sustainability #environment #technology #investment #capital #research #unitednations #climatechange #texas #houston https://lnkd.in/gdMrgspE

Inspiring to see such a historic #investment in the future of #water by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)! 💰 🚰 This landmark action takes an enormous step to revitalize our water infrastructure across the country. I'm increasingly focused on these issues given our work at Tahoe Lead Removal Project and San Francisco Baykeeper, and can't overstate the significance of this announcement! This $50 billion commitment is the single largest investment in water that the federal government has ever made. It will be distributed towards a range of projects with tangible impact for people across the nation, including: - replace lead pipes - protect critical bodies of water - build drinking water and wastewater systems - ensure resilience to climate change The lead issue is obviously one I'm personally passionate about. As cited by the EPA, there are still 6 to 10 million lead services lines in cities and towns across the country. This decisive action is a huge step to keep our communities protected from PFAS or “forever chemical” contamination, as well as provide jobs in the space. How we approach the #sustainability of our systems has evolved over the decades. Incredible to see bipartisan support and such resounding #leadership on this critical, generational issue. https://lnkd.in/gRja9ukZ

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 🚨The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a report projecting that the U.S. will need a staggering $630 billion over the next 20 years to modernize our aging #water infrastructure, including #wastewater and #stormwater systems. 💧A recent survey shows that this investment is not just necessary — it’s critical to protecting the waterways that provide our drinking water, sustain agriculture, support economic growth, and offer safe recreation. Despite important federal investments, the gap between available funds and actual needs continues to widen. The takeaway is clear: we need long-term and innovative solutions to secure the future of our water resources. 💪 https://hubs.ly/Q02NKDJJ0

So if $630 BILLION is needed to bring wastewater infrastructure up to todays standards how much is really needed to for the future and climate change ? In some places you get a chance every 20 years to rebuild, some cities it’s so hard you won’t get to rebuild for 50 to 100 years. So we need to build tomorrow’s infrastructure today to avoid slipping further behind.
