Inspiring to see such a historic #investment in the future of #water by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)! 💰 🚰 This landmark action takes an enormous step to revitalize our water infrastructure across the country. I'm increasingly focused on these issues given our work at Tahoe Lead Removal Project and San Francisco Baykeeper, and can't overstate the significance of this announcement! This $50 billion commitment is the single largest investment in water that the federal government has ever made. It will be distributed towards a range of projects with tangible impact for people across the nation, including: - replace lead pipes - protect critical bodies of water - build drinking water and wastewater systems - ensure resilience to climate change The lead issue is obviously one I'm personally passionate about. As cited by the EPA, there are still 6 to 10 million lead services lines in cities and towns across the country. This decisive action is a huge step to keep our communities protected from PFAS or “forever chemical” contamination, as well as provide jobs in the space. How we approach the #sustainability of our systems has evolved over the decades. @Texas lawmakers approved a billion-dollar investment in #water #infrastructure and Texas voters, as they always have, ratified that decision. The thing is that the Clean Watersheds Needs Survey conducted by the federal Environmental Protection agency says that in total, US infrastructure #investment (not just Texas) needs are over $1 trillion over the next 20 years. The combination of #aging #facilities and #climate #change has impacted #water, #wastewater, #nonpoint source #pollution, #decentralized wastewater and #stormwater. The Infrastructure Investment Act provided $12 billion to revolving funds and $1 billion for emerging #contaminants but that is just a drop in the bucket of critical funding. EPA qualifies their reports by noting that they are probably underestimates because of data and reporting challenges and lack of long-term planning and exclusion of tribal wastewater needs. Urban stormwater management – new Obligations of managers of land or infrastructure In May 2024, obligations relating to the management of urban stormwater were set for councils in the Obligations of managers of land or infrastructure (Urban stormwater management and On-site wastewater management) (the OMLI) https://lnkd.in/grvgepuj. The OMLI also contains obligations for councils and water corporations relating to on-site wastewater management. Clause 5 of the OMLI continues the requirement from the now expired State Environment Protection Policy (Waters) for councils to develop stormwater management (or equivalent) plans. Specifically, it requires councils to: • Develop and publish a plan that identifies risks posed by stormwater and actions to address those risks, in consultation with relevant stakeholders. • Review and update the plan and report publicly on implementation at least every five years.
