In recent years, the role of hotel concierges has not only survived but thrived. Burak Ipekci, Secretary General of Les Clefs d'Or International, embodies this resilience and evolution perfectly. Burak brings over 25 years of experience to his dual roles as Head Concierge at The Royal Horseguards Hotel in London and leader within the association. Why did you join the hotel industry? "Meeting interesting people" is not a good reason to join the hotel industry, notwithstanding this is what what most hoteliers will answer when someone mentions this. If you should meet someone interesting and I say IF.......that may be fun in the moment, but overall what does this truly add to your work experience? Nothing.....kan? For me personally, the real advantage to working in the hotel industry is the wide range of skills and experience you would acquire for use, should you choose a career change that represented advancement in either salary or position or both (these do not necessarily go hand in hand). It is also quite useful for our personal lives too.....wifey merajuk, no problem, we can iron the laundry and make the beds. Hungry at midnight? No problem, some of us can cook a delicious fried rice, better than Uncle Roger or Uncle Soon 😅

ABOUT TRULY GREAT HOTEL MANAGERS This interview with an executive of The Peninsula Hotels that touches on their philosophy for hiring managers resonates with my own. If a hotel is able to hire a professional who trained at one of the world's top hotel schools, then the chance of getting the real deal hospitality package of skills and attitude is very high. Outside of these elite group of hotel professionals, it's like winning a lottery to hire someone with an authentic sense of hospitality. After interviewing so many potential candidates to replace my amazing general manager Napo -- yes, I won the lottery that time -- who has been with La Esperanza Granada since Day 1 but is soon embarking on the next chapter of his life, I realized that a real sense of service and a talent for organization is what I should be looking for and professional skills are desirable but only secondary. The skills can be learned via a hotel consultant over several weeks or months, but the real attitude is either there or not. And if you are the manager, it cannot be there only for eight hours of the working day. At least not if you are aiming for greatness.

🌟 Ever wondered what it takes to land a job at a luxury hotel? Well, let’s just say it’s not really about your skills or experience... 😏 First off, let’s talk about your resume. Have you worked at a "normal" hotel? How quaint! But unfortunately, in the world of luxury, that’s like having fast food experience when you’re applying to be a Michelin-star chef. 🍔👨🍳 Did you manage a bustling team and keep your guests happy? That’s adorable, but we’re looking for someone who has mastered the art of adjusting the angle of a pillow just so. 🛏️✨ Next up, education. You might have a degree in Hospitality Management, but did you attend the top 0.01% of hospitality schools? 🎓 If your school doesn't have "prestige" dripping from its walls, well, we might have a lovely concierge position opening in about ten years. 😂 And let’s not forget the all-important pedigree. 🐶 If your family hasn’t been in the luxury hotel business for at least five generations, we’re afraid you just won’t fit in with our legacy staff. 👵👩👧👶👶 No family legacy? Tough break! We prefer our employees to have grown up discussing pillow menus over breakfast. 🥐 Then there's the experience. Have you spent years perfecting the art of guest satisfaction? That’s nice, but we’re really looking for someone who has catered to royalty, celebrities, and maybe a unicorn or two. 🦄👑 Your guests were satisfied? Our guests need to be enchanted, pampered, and treated as if they just descended from Mount Olympus. 🏛️✨ So, if you're thinking about applying to a luxury hotel, just remember: it's not about what you know, but who your ancestors were, where you learned how to fluff a pillow, and whether your last name sounds like it belongs in a yacht club registry. 🌊⚓ #LuxuryLife #EliteHiring #NormalHotelProblems #Sarcasm #HospitalityTruths #ExclusiveOnly
