Fellow writers, editors, and PR humans PLEASE READ: I can't tell you how many times in the last two weeks I have heard, or read a piece, about people being worried as to where the publishing industry will go. The obvious answer is NOWHERE. Yes, jobs may change and that can hurt. I am sorry! However, the key to "success" and security is value. Understand where and what you can add to a client, a publication, yourself, etc. Consider making your own outlet, or column. You can even monetize that via blogs, columns on Medium (it's free), or be bold enough to start your own publication like Trails Magazine, The Adventure Travel Network, The Climbing Zine or Advanture Magazine. This is your life and it is in your hands. Writers, do what you do best, write! Editors, you need writers, so find some and work together! PR humans, you need publications, so support the small ones and help out your writers+editors! Enough is enough about the woes of the industry. We live in the most accessible and democratized world to date. You have the power. The resources are at the tip of your fingers. You are capable. So, put your boots on and trudge through the murky waters. Create something of value and when you are successful, look back and either give the bird to all those who told you no, or have some empathy and teach them what you have learned.

Screenwriters hate being told that they need to focus on one genre. But at the beginning of your career, it's the best thing you can do to create opportunities for yourself. Here's why: When someone wants to hire a writer (or pitch a writer they represent) they put together a list of the people who are most perfect for the job. They order that list with the best fit at the top and the less obvious fits at the bottom. When you are a jack-of-all-trades writer, even if you *can* write well in multiple genres, you're going to be at the middle of multiple lists. Instead, it's better to be the *first* person someone thinks of for just a few. Once you make a name for yourself, there's no reason you can't break out into other genres. Many successful writers have done it. But when you're starting out, the focus should be on defining a specialty to become that *go to* writer for certain projects. That's what creates real opportunity. Just saying "trust me, I can do anything," might be true. But it's not compelling. Authors are often reluctant to hire editors for fear of judgment. I've gone over this before. Judgment is not necessarily negative. Criticism is not necessarily detrimental. Yes, an editor's job entails finding the flaws within written content, identifying them, and suggesting improvements. Now the author needs to go a little bit further. The editor does not focus solely on finding flaws. That's part of the process, but not the entirety of the process. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. Full stop. You write content. Hire a writer who is a traveller. A citizen of the world, who has a memory of unique experiences to pull from and play with. A bank of life experiences that no other human on earth has. A deeper understanding of the universal and the human psyche. The births and deaths, homecomings and goodbyes, the familiarity and freedom, are all built into a life of movement. The insights, revelations and breakthroughs are frequent. An observer, an outsider, a voyager, is comfortable in the unknown. Which can be applied to work, helping clients spot opportunities to go ‘off the beaten track’ in business. A writer who is a traveller is no ordinary ‘#copywriter’ or ‘#contentwriter’.

I don’t proofread anymore. That is, it’s a service I no longer offer. When I finish copyediting or line editing a project, I make it a rule not to proofread the manuscript afterward. Why? Because after spending countless hours analyzing every sentence, reworking syntax, and ensuring consistency, I’ve become too close to the text to spot errors effectively. Editing requires intense focus. I’ve scrutinized each comma, adjusted phrasing for clarity, and resolved style inconsistencies. But this deep involvement means I start seeing what I expect to see, not what’s actually on the page. Familiarity with the content breeds blind spots. My brain fills in missing words or overlooks repeated phrases because it’s already imprinted the “correct” version into my mind. Proofreading, however, demands fresh eyes. It’s the final polish, a task best suited for someone who hasn’t been living with the manuscript for weeks or months. A proofreader can approach the work with a clean slate, catching small errors that I might unconsciously gloss over due to my immersion in the editing process. Authors often hesitate to hire both an editor and a proofreader, but these roles are complementary, not interchangeable. As an editor, my job is to elevate the manuscript, ensuring the language flows and supports the narrative. The proofreader’s job is to catch every lingering typo and formatting inconsistency. Together, we create the strongest possible version of the book. My letting go of the proofreading stage isn’t a failure; it’s an acknowledgment of how the editorial process works best. By recognizing my limits, I ensure authors get the quality their work deserves.
