As I continue my job search, I am coming back full circle to where I started--having a desire to be very intentional with the roles and the organizations I apply for. Sometimes it's easy to get desperate and apply to anything and everything because you JUST NEED AN INCOME. BUT. Is that really getting you anywhere? And if you do happen to land a role that is far from your first choice, how long will you be there, unfulfilled and miserable? (This would be me in finance!) When I discuss my job search with others, there seems to be a big gap between people who believe you should just take whatever comes along and those who encourage job seekers to find that "sweet spot"--where passions, skills, and purpose meet. Will every role and every employer be 100% perfect? Absolutely not. But does it hurt to refine your search? No, not at all. It's like finding your target audience and tailoring your message to that audience. You'll never resonate without intentionality. Let's talk about the job market right now for #socialimpact professionals. I've been on it (in it might be a better phrase) for the last 8 months and it is rough. For every opportunity there are dozens (hundreds) of candidates all of whom I suspect are equally qualified. For each step you take forward there are three other declines. Each round (and sometimes there are more than half a dozen) feels like a tightrope walk. Reminding yourself that you are not your #jobsearch takes fortitude. Nothing is easy. So to everyone else out there navigating their way through this thorny, exhausting, hard process - I see you today. It isn't you. It's the process. #jobseeking #jobmarket #employment

How does the job search process make you feel? Last week, I ran a poll to understand how #jobseekers are feeling in this current job market. Out of 50 votes: 46% feel drained by the uncertainty 36% feel frustrated with the system 16% feel anxious but determined Only 2% said they feel motivated and hopeful. What does this tell us? When 98% of job seekers report feeling frustrated, drained, or anxious with the hiring process, it signals more than just dissatisfaction. It shows us a system under strain that is no longer meeting its purpose. Im not writing this to complain, but I think we need to recognize this is a real issue that impacts not just individuals, but the companies and teams that rely on finding great talent. The job search process shouldn’t break people. Is this a crisis? A crisis is generally defined as: A time of intense difficulty, distress, or instability, often requiring immediate action or intervention. A turning point or critical situation where the current system, process, or approach is no longer sustainable and risks failure if not addressed. While this may not be a total collapse, I think the evidence points a dark picture of the direction we are headed in. How do we turn this around?

It's a bit discouraging—and ironic—when you’re in the middle of filling out an application, thoughtfully crafting each answer, only to see the job posting disappear right before your eyes. A stark reminder of the unpredictability in today's job market, where opportunities can vanish in an instant. It’s not just a statement about competition, but about the reality job seekers face every day. Keep pushing forward. #JobMarket #JobSearchStruggles #KeepGoing

My observations 4 weeks in to my career transition: 1). Be prepared to tell people EXACTLY how they can help you. They want to help, but it's not their job to figure out what you should be doing next. 2). Guidance from other people is a reflection of their personal experiences. It's helpful, but they're not you. Think of when you met your spouse ... did you make that connection by copying what a friend did, or did you have to trust your gut? 3). Unemployment is an industry, too. I've been pitched a hundred times by people with products or services to 'help' me. I refer you to #1 ... be clear on exactly what it is that you want and need. 4). Losing your job doesn't devalue you like it used to. Very few people get the 40 year gold watch anymore, and whether you get to decide when to leave or it gets decided for you is increasingly viewed like a game of musical chairs rather than the assumption that it reflects a personal defect. 5) Since the entire workforce is always looking and open to switching jobs now, it makes things more competitive. Employers will receive hundreds of resumes from candidates who are generally qualified. They have the luxury of waiting to thread the needle. Be specific in your notes and cover letters. Add color to demonstrate to a hiring manager EXACTLY what it could be like to work with you.

In today's job market, job seekers' challenges often mirror human nature's inherent flaws. Despite technological advancements and societal progress, these four deeply ingrained shortcomings continue to shape and complicate the employment landscape: 1️⃣ The Myopia of Greed: Corporate culture's relentless pursuit of profit often overshadows the value of human potential, leading to exploitation and a devaluation of talent. 2️⃣ The Fragility of Ego: Hiring managers, driven by their own need for validation, prioritize appearances over substance, fostering a culture of superficiality where genuine talent is overlooked. 3️⃣ The Inevitability of Conflict: The job search is a battlefield riddled with competition and power struggles, where collaboration is often sacrificed in favor of individual gain. 4️⃣ The Burden of Consciousness: Our awareness of our potential and the fleeting nature of opportunity breeds existential anxiety, making the job search a constant reminder of the precariousness of our existence. These flaws, deeply ingrained in our nature, create a challenging environment for job seekers. While technology may offer new tools and platforms, it cannot overcome the fundamental shortcomings of human behavior that continue to shape the employment landscape. 💡 Do you agree that these flaws are the biggest obstacles facing job seekers today? It's not you. Finding a job has gotten significantly harder. Here's why! Are you wondering why it’s tougher to land a job despite seemingly favorable market conditions? You're not alone in this frustration. Many are finding the job search more challenging than ever, despite robust economic indicators. Here’s what you need to know to navigate the evolving job market. 1. Increased Job Search Duration: On average, job seekers are taking longer to secure positions, with current times averaging about nine-and-a-half weeks compared to eight weeks two years ago. 2. High Competition Despite Low Unemployment: Although unemployment rates are low and job openings are plentiful, the competition among candidates remains fierce, partly due to the residual effects of recent layoffs. 3. Impact of Artificial Intelligence: AI tools have become a game-changer, leveling the playing field by enhancing resumes across the board, which increases competition for available roles. 4. Shift from Employee to Employer’s Market: Post-pandemic, the balance of power is shifting back to employers, who now have the luxury to be choosier due to the abundance of available talent. 5. Networking Is More Crucial Than Ever: Building and maintaining relationships within your desired industry can significantly increase your chances of landing a job in today’s market. 6. Patience and Realism Are Necessary: Understand that the hiring surge seen during the Great Resignation was an anomaly. Current slower hiring rates may feel like a downturn, but they reflect a stabilization of the market.
