How does the job search process make you feel? Last week, I ran a poll to understand how #jobseekers are feeling in this current job market. Out of 50 votes: 46% feel drained by the uncertainty 36% feel frustrated with the system 16% feel anxious but determined Only 2% said they feel motivated and hopeful. What does this tell us? When 98% of job seekers report feeling frustrated, drained, or anxious with the hiring process, it signals more than just dissatisfaction. It shows us a system under strain that is no longer meeting its purpose. Im not writing this to complain, but I think we need to recognize this is a real issue that impacts not just individuals, but the companies and teams that rely on finding great talent. The job search process shouldn’t break people. Is this a crisis? A crisis is generally defined as: A time of intense difficulty, distress, or instability, often requiring immediate action or intervention. A turning point or critical situation where the current system, process, or approach is no longer sustainable and risks failure if not addressed. While this may not be a total collapse, I think the evidence points a dark picture of the direction we are headed in. How do we turn this around?

When Experience Becomes a Barrier: The Harsh Reality of Job Searching After more than a year of job searching, countless applications, and numerous interviews, I find myself grappling with an unsettling reality—having four degrees, including a doctorate in public health, and over a decade of experience seems to be working against me rather than for me. I’ve been told I’m "overqualified," as if my dedication to learning and expertise is a risk rather than an asset. I’ve faced promising interviews that ended in silence—ghosted without explanation. I’ve even been warned that companies fear I will leave prematurely because of my qualifications, despite my commitment to contributing meaningfully to any organization I join. If I, with my credentials and experience, am struggling this much, I can only imagine what others are facing. How many talented professionals are being overlooked because of outdated hiring biases? How many are experiencing burnout from this cycle of rejection, uncertainty, and job-search fatigue? Something needs to change. How do we shift hiring mindsets so that experience and education are seen as strengths, not liabilities? How do we create a system where job seekers are valued for what they bring to the table rather than dismissed for assumptions about what they might do next? To those in hiring positions, recruiters, and fellow job seekers—what solutions do you see? How can we prevent job seekers from being penalized for their own success? Let’s start the conversation. #JobSearch #HiringBias #Overqualified #PublicHealth #JobSeekerSupport

Today's lesson for your job search pursuits: 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 In work (and in life) a handy core competency is adapability. My Top-10 Military-to-Civilian Lessons Learned (The Hard Way). This is a tough one! 3. Avoid Reeking of Desperation. It's hard to be patient after an interview if you're not hearing anything back from the hiring team. It's even harder when you're told "you'll hear from us by this date", and then that day comes and goes with nothing heard (this happens A LOT). When I posted my lesson-learned #2, many commenters explained some of the many reasons for such delays in communications: busy hiring managers, large number of candidates, HR timelines and delays. So the question becomes: how do you respond when this inevitably happens to you? How do you ask for updates without seeming desperate? Job searching is similar to dating: employers will start doubting you if you seem too needy. There's a value to being perceived as confident, a "you need me more than I need you" type of thing. I look back and cringe 😬 a little, and wonder how many job opportunities did I lose out on by projecting desperation rather than confidence? For future career moves, I'm going to factor desperation avoidance into my strategy: I'll focus less on submitting multiple applications in favor of simply building relationships and expanding my network. In effect, I will create the conditions for opportunity and I'll be prepared for opportunity when it knocks, as opposed to wandering door-to-door begging to be let in. It's a bit discouraging—and ironic—when you’re in the middle of filling out an application, thoughtfully crafting each answer, only to see the job posting disappear right before your eyes. A stark reminder of the unpredictability in today's job market, where opportunities can vanish in an instant. It’s not just a statement about competition, but about the reality job seekers face every day. Keep pushing forward. #JobMarket #JobSearchStruggles #KeepGoing

In today's job market, job seekers' challenges often mirror human nature's inherent flaws. Despite technological advancements and societal progress, these four deeply ingrained shortcomings continue to shape and complicate the employment landscape: 1️⃣ The Myopia of Greed: Corporate culture's relentless pursuit of profit often overshadows the value of human potential, leading to exploitation and a devaluation of talent. 2️⃣ The Fragility of Ego: Hiring managers, driven by their own need for validation, prioritize appearances over substance, fostering a culture of superficiality where genuine talent is overlooked. 3️⃣ The Inevitability of Conflict: The job search is a battlefield riddled with competition and power struggles, where collaboration is often sacrificed in favor of individual gain. 4️⃣ The Burden of Consciousness: Our awareness of our potential and the fleeting nature of opportunity breeds existential anxiety, making the job search a constant reminder of the precariousness of our existence. These flaws, deeply ingrained in our nature, create a challenging environment for job seekers. While technology may offer new tools and platforms, it cannot overcome the fundamental shortcomings of human behavior that continue to shape the employment landscape. 💡 Do you agree that these flaws are the biggest obstacles facing job seekers today? Feeling overwhelmed during a job search is completely normal and you’re not alone in this. It’s okay to feel frustrated or uncertain at times. But in moments like these, focusing on what’s within your control can make all the difference. Try setting small, achievable daily goals: ✔ Apply to 4 jobs ✔ Connect with 10 recruiters ✔ Submit your resume to 3 staffing firms ✔ Update your LinkedIn. These steps might feel small, but they add up and keep you moving forward. Most importantly, surround yourself with people who lift you up. Lean on those who believe in you, see your potential, and remind you of your worth. With the right support, you’re not just surviving this process, you’re building your next chapter. Keep showing up for yourself. You’re stronger than you think, and your breakthrough might be closer than you realize. 💪✨ #jobhunt #lookingforajob #youarestrong #rememberwhoyouare #staffingfirms #support

4moP.S. I know “anxious but determined” (16%) could be interpreted as a positive, but the dominant feeling here is still anxious. I worded it that way on purpose anxious, but determined and not determined, yet anxious. Even if we include “anxious but determined” as positive, we would be at 18% positive versus 82% negative , which still reveals a system overwhelmingly weighted toward struggle and dissatisfaction.
