I spend a few hours this week volunteering to mentor an interesting cohort of startups in the area of deep tech and space/propulsion. Some areas were very much in my wheel house, and some were not. Taking a look at the challenges folks are having, and listening to elevator pitches was interesting, because it felt that all of us are thinking in the same direction: how to go, really, really fast. In the hyper competitive hardware and SAAS marketplace, the company that's able to develop the next XYZ technology faster, tends to have first mover advantage. at SoftInWay, this is a very big part of our mantra both in our own development of the AxSTREAM platform for turbomachinery and thermofluid system design/analysis, but also in our efforts to help our customers design the most advance "mouse trap" for their specific application. What happens when you put two incredible innovators together with a dash of "gasoline" (our shorthand for accelerant...in this case Shawn Mahoney and Julie Baron, MBA, ABC)? An amazing collision of conversation, laughter and ideas. Thank you Bradley Wamboldt of Hawk & Squirrel Innovation Inc. and Bradley Maynes for being our test run of "Open Chair" last night, an experiment in which we introduced two people from the Spare Parts & Gasoline network to exchange perspectives over a nice meal. Key takeaways from the conversation include the importance of strategic investors who are looking at longer-term horizons and making meaningful impact (versus short-term returns), that making robots in our own image is a lot more boring than removing design constraints altogether and how the four of us might collaborate to solve crucial energy and technology challenges.
