Are leaders with diverse ‘non-traditional’ careers in the box seat for the future of work? I was talking with a three Chief People Officers from different industries recently about what businesses are looking for in their leaders and what differentiates top talent. Core leadership attributes like commerciality, strategy, drive, influence, collaboration, EQ, courage and communication were a ‘given’ and while functional know-how is important it is also relative to context of the business strategy and what the role needs most. That is, some experience gaps are normal and can be filled with experts on the team. So, what sets them apart? It was career experiences OUTSIDE their core function or in DIFFERENT industries that distinguished the better talent. This talent has high impact, is ‘what I look for’ said one and should be ‘snapped up in a heartbeat’ said another. Why? · 👉 Adaptability – unfazed by the new-ness and ambiguity, these leaders are willing to listen & understand first and best apply their capability muscle in new contexts · 👉 Contribute broadly – with a variety of responsibilities and exposures to how work gets done (and what gets in the way) they can readily help cut through to what has impact · 👉 Curiosity – sometimes businesses don’t know what they don’t know and bringing in fresh eyes can ask ‘why’, help discovery of ‘what else’ and spark creativity Diversified experience is something to keep front of mind if you’re considering a change (or just made one), developing leaders internally or looking to bring in new talent. The evolving landscape of work demands flexibility, trust, and experimentation for success. Leaders should pivot towards nurturing progress over perfection, and fostering inclusive and human-centric workplaces by aligning success with personal values. Setting lofty expectations without providing the right balance of support and autonomy, alongside the right amount of development opportunity, is not going to encourage or enable success. Embracing lifelong learning and creativity is key as we navigate these changes together. #FutureOfWork #Leadership #Innovation #EmployeeEngagement #Adaptability #LearningAndDevelopment https://lnkd.in/eT9xYaEe

The future of work is a journey of discovery rather than a destination. As organizations navigate unprecedented changes, the focus should shift from rigid structures to fostering adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning. Embracing uncertainty allows leaders to co-create solutions with employees, leveraging diverse perspectives to build a resilient workplace. By prioritizing experimentation over perfection, organizations can redefine success through outcomes rather than outdated metrics. This transformation requires a cultural shift where flexibility and trust are paramount, paving the way for innovation that aligns individual needs with organizational goals. #leadership #futureofwork #innovation #adaptability #Collaboration
