A big thank you to LPC’s talented class of summer interns and our Adolf Placzek Fellow, who’ve spent the past few months learning about the Commission’s work, conducting special research projects on a range of preservation-related topics, helping organize LPC’s photo library, and more. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this talented crew! We're grateful to NYC Department of Youth & Community Development and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), Design Trust for Public Space, Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York, and the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation for their generous support of these important internships and fellowship as we look to develop the next generation of preservationists.

Rural communities are the backbone of American society, if they are not prosperous we cannot achieve a country without inequality. With this investment in the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, the Ford Foundation hopes to empower Vermont’s rural communities with the tools they need for sustainable growth, while also providing UVM students with service-learning experiences that help cultivate the next generation of leaders.
We’re excited to announce that the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships will expand its summer internship program, thanks to a $250K grant from the Ford Foundation Ford Foundation. This funding will allow us to send student groups to the Northeast Kingdom and the White River Valley in the summer of 2025. The program supports both economic and community development while helping students build valuable professional and leadership skills. We’re grateful for this generous support, which enables us to continue empowering our students and strengthening rural communities in Vermont. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eqZCbsvS

Our President & CEO, Kevin Dean, Ed.D., was quoted today in a The Daily Memphian article about an amazing new opportunity for students at University of Memphis. The Mellon Foundation is investing $48 million in 11 universities, including the University of Memphis, to fund paid internships for humanities majors. This initiative aims to combat the declining interest in humanities degrees by providing students with valuable work experience and highlighting the career opportunities available in the nonprofit sector. By offering paid internships, the program also addresses the issue of equity and access for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who may not be able to afford unpaid internships. https://lnkd.in/gCczkTvH

HBCU courses often emphasize community engagement, leadership, and social justice, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among students. The curriculum typically includes general education requirements, major-specific courses, and opportunities for research, internships, and experiential learning. HBCUs are known for their supportive environments, smaller class sizes, and faculty dedicated to student success and mentorship. This unique combination helps students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for professional careers and civic involvement. 1.833.364.3422 (1.833.3NID-HCA)

We believe it’s important to discuss how and if you want to contribute to your kid’s college fund. There are a lot of creative ways to approach this. 🤜You could pay a portion of their education. 🤜You could require that they apply for a certain amount of scholarships each semester. 🤜You could purchase a rental property for your child to live in for free while in college and have them manage renting out the extra rooms. 🤜They could take as many college classes as possible in high school. Many high schoolers now graduate with an associate’s degree. 🤜Look into community colleges, state schools, trade schools, internships. What creative approaches have you tried or are planning on trying to keep college costs low?
