But what mechanisms drive accountability in #cyberspace? 🧬 The pursuit of accountability is like a chemical reaction where the reactants – power-wielder and accountability holder – are transformed, resulting in different products. ⚙️ In the context of the accountability discussion, catalysts are signals that activate the accountability mechanisms. 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐌𝐃𝐬! I earned my PhD in information technology and military science in 2016, in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä and the National Defence University in Finland. At that time, the terrorist group ISIS was very active in the Middle East, and there were several attacks in Europe as well. Many were carried out using guns and homemade explosives (HME) produced from extremely sensitive and powerful agents like TATP. There was also a threat of chemical warfare agents (CWA), and large amounts of sarin were removed and destroyed from war zones by the decision of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). In preceding years, there had also been severe natural disasters, nuclear accidents, and releases of toxic industrial chemicals, which caused massive destruction, casualties, and long-term injuries, as seen in Fukushima (2011), Tianjin (2015), Chernobyl (1986), and Bhopal (1984). In my doctoral research and development work, I aimed to produce technical solutions to protect people from such life-threatening disasters and to prevent toxic releases, crimes, and exposure in the first place. Two innovative technologies were developed with European Commission funding, and they are still available on the market. In 2012, I also volunteered with the Association for Protection, Rescue, Security, and Safety (SPT ry) and helped them to organize an international conference on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) threats, held every three years in Finland. Unfortunately, the risk of serious accidents and intentional violence with destructive agents has not disappeared. "First the Truth. Then the dream." This became the refrain of a major political alliance ("Truthers") rebelling against the incumbent presidency (of the "Dreamers") in the dystopian novel 2054. And for what it's worth, the novel is very much as pithy as the refrain when it comes to illustrating the most pressing geopolitical issues facing our world today in the guise of fiction. In this second installment of a trilogy, the world grapples with the race and consequences of the Singularity, a hypothetical point in future - in this case 2054 - where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible. What form could the Singularity take? What are the technologies that contribute to the Singularity? Is the Singularity universally desirable across all nation states? I would recommend this (and the first book in the series, 2034 for a deeper dive into cybersecurity and nuclear fallout) to anyone who would like plausible answers to these questions.
