VP of Sales @ SaaS company: "Nah, I'm not involved in that!' Recruiter: Ok. But you are the regional head of sales right? VP of Sales: Yup! Recruiter: Ok cool - who do you report to? VP of Sales: CEO / Board. Recruiter: OK cool. Do you mind me asking why they employed you in the first place? VP of Sales: It's obvious isn't it. I'm here to implement sales strategy, and build a world class sales team. It's what I do! Recruiter: Ok cool. So in theory - you are the most knowledgable person when it comes to sales right? At least in the eyes of the Board, right? VP of Sales: Yup - six figures, a million shares and a lot of benefits says so! Recruiter: How good would you say your eye for spotting sales talent is? VP of Sales: Razor sharp! Recruiter: Razor sharp hey!? What makes you say that? VP of Sales: Because I know a good sales person when I see one! 25 years in the game - son! Recruiter: Ok.... - so why are you not involved in the hiring process then? VP of Sales: Hmm.. I have this conversation every single day! What's wrong with it? #WorkSmartNotHard

What is your actual sales cycle for net new deals? I've noticed a common misconception among hiring managers when it comes to sales cycles, especially when setting expectations for new Account Executives. It’s easy to assume that the timeline for closing deals will mirror what they’re used to—quick wins (relative) from referrals or inbound leads. But here’s the thing: there’s a world of difference between closing a deal with a warm lead and building trust with a net new client from scratch. When you're hiring an AE to bring in new business, you're asking them to do more than just close deals—they need to create opportunities. This takes time. Cold outreach, nurturing relationships, and understanding the unique needs of new prospects are all part of the equation. Expecting the same sales cycle as your inbound leads can lead to frustration and missed opportunities. Let's give our new hires the time they need to truly develop their pipeline, and recognize that the investment in building these relationships will pay off in the long run. Understanding the real sales cycle isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about setting realistic expectations and supporting your teams to succeed. #SalesCycle #Hiring #AccountExecutive #BusinessDevelopment #SalesLeadership

Hiring a sales rep and telling them, "Just go sell," is setting them up for failure. If you can't provide crystal clear expectations for their first six months, you simply aren’t ready to make that hire. A structured system with defined metrics is essential—not only to guide their performance but to keep them engaged, motivated, and aligned with the company’s goals. “We are looking for hungry sales reps.” There was a time when I bought into this mantra. A time where I wanted everyone to be hungry and “need” to make money quickly. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the damage of “hunger” in sales. Sales is a long game. It’s not a get rich quick profession. It’s not about squeezing clients to get the fastest sale. Seasoned, mature sales professionals get this and they build value and seek win-win outcomes. I’ve seen what hiring “hungry” sales reps looks like and it’s not an ideal scenario for any reputable company. Make the investment and hire professionals, not someone looking for scraps. #salesleadership #salesprofessionals #investforsuccess

If you think hiring "experienced sales reps" is your key to successfully scaling your sales team, you're sorely mistaken. I thought I had it all figured out too but then I learned (the hard way) that there was a difference between Experience and Expertise. 👉 Experience is repeated exposure Experience is the life equivalent of a really extensive experiment. You put yourself out there, win some, lose some, and always learn in the process. It's a place to try things out. 👉 Expertise is honing your craft It's the mastery achieved by going deep into a subject, fueled by passion and persistence. Keyword is "mastery" with demonstrated results to back it up. ❌ In my experience, you can have high Experience with low Expertise. 💡 Can you have high Expertise with low Experience? Maybe? If the experience was really intense maybe you can? Generally no, right? This is why I feel so strongly about having a thorough hiring process for your sales leaders as well as your sales people so that you can learn more about their expertise and go beyond just learning about their experience. 💡 Learning Lesson: when you’re hiring for your sales leaders or sales people, make sure that you are exploring both their experience as well as their expertise. There’s a big difference. Ever been burned hiring that salesperson or sales leader who had lots of Experience but not Expertise?

In today’s fast-paced world, adaptability and curiosity often outweigh direct experience. Too much experience in one area can create path dependence, limiting fresh thinking. It's not about knowing every product - it’s about learning fast, understanding the customer, and solving their problems creatively. A strong learning mindset builds resilience, drives innovation, and breaks away from old patterns, leading to long-term success in any market.
This SaaS company hired a sales director With zero solution-specific experience Now, his APAC team generate 30% of global sales! Last year, I met a VP of Sales with a tough hire to make He needed an experienced sales director to drive growth in their APAC region. But there was one big problem… The company’s SaaS product was very new (they’re the global leader in this domain) And so no one else had sold this kind of solution before This made it impossible to find anyone who had the "right" experience. When I first spoke to him, I could tell he was stressed. He felt like he was trying to find a candidate that essentially didn’t exist Here’s what I told him “Direct experience isn’t everything.” Some hiring managers see it as a “guarantee” that their new hire will be successful. But in reality, this isn’t always the case. So, when you can’t hire direct experience Why not assess candidates on their attitude and learning ability instead? 3 weeks later, the VP hired a Sales Director from a completely different software sector. She had ZERO related solution experience… but it didn’t matter. Because she had an impeccable mindset and attitude. She knew how to run a successful team, and the VP could easily fill in any knowledge gaps. Fast forward to today… and her team are the company’s global top performers! (They generate 30% of the group’s annual revenue!!!) Let this story be a reminder that attitude is an incredibly valuable measure. When you hire someone who just gets it…. You’ll completely forget about their “lack” of relevant experience.

Some helpful tips from Sussane for anyone in my network hunting for a Sales role. They will help you stand out and secure that interview. Good luck! #salesjobs #resumetips #jobhunting #ottawajobs
Revenue Growth | Customer Success | Direct Sales| Professional Services | Integrated Business Planning | SaaS | Known for increasing revenue - FY18: 78.5%, FY19: 108.8%, FY20: 86%, FY21: 57.2%, FY22: 71%, FY24:18%
We’re on the hunt for 4 Sales Reps and 2 Sales Directors, which means I’ve had the pleasure (insert slight eye roll) of reviewing dozens and dozens of applications. If you’re applying for a sales role—here or anywhere—here’s my 2 cents on how to stand out and make a hiring manager’s life a little easier: 1️⃣ Be clear about what you sold The company name on your resume isn’t enough. Was it SaaS B2B sales? Equipment? Recruiting services? Don’t make me Google it. Tell me what you sold and how it connects to the role you’re applying for. 2️⃣ Show me the numbers How many quarters/years in a row did you hit target? What quota did you carry? If you missed quota, be transparent—tell me why. (There are valid reasons, and it shows self-awareness.) 3️⃣ Location matters. Where have you sold? Are you familiar with rural markets? Regional expertise can make a big difference depending on the role. 4️⃣ Industry expertise matters too. Have you worked in industries we’re targeting? If you bring niche knowledge, let me know—it’s a selling point! 5️⃣ Know your sales focus. Are you a pro at enterprise sales with long cycles, or do you thrive in the faster-paced mid-market world? Different sales cycles, different skills. 6️⃣ Explain gaps in experience. If you don’t have the experience listed in the posting, don’t just hope I’ll overlook it. Tell me why you’re applying. Some of the best people I’ve hired didn’t have the “perfect” background, but they made a great case for why they were the right fit. 🛑 Don’t make me guess or search for information. If I’m squinting at your resume trying to piece things together, you’re already at a disadvantage. Hiring is a two-way street. Help me get excited about you—and make it easy to see why you’d crush it in the role! Good luck out there! 🚀 #sales #hiring #careeradvice
