The average American earns 14 days of PTO per year. Here's how I travel 27 days each year, using only 12 days of PTO. It's called the 9-4-1 Rule. And yes, I just made that up. The 9-4-1 Rule allows you to take three separate 9-day trips each year, without maxing out your allotted annual PTO. 9 days of travel = 4 PTO days + 1 holiday (spread over two weekends) Here's how you can use it to maximize your PTO in 2025: 1. Memorial Day: (9 travel days, 4 days PTO) • May 24-25 (Saturday-Sunday): Weekend • May 26 (Monday): Memorial Day (Public Holiday) • May 27-30 (Tuesday-Friday): PTO Days 1-4 • May 31-June 1 (Saturday-Sunday): Weekend 2. Of the countries surveyed, America comes last on the average number of vacation days allotted and the average number of vacation days taken, and, for the most part, it’s not even close. 👉Per the report, workers in Hong Kong were happiest to get stuck into their PTO pot, typically not leaving any of their average 26 vacation days unused. It’s frustrating, especially knowing you’re using time meant for relaxation on recovery instead. Fortunately, Belgium’s labor law is changing to address this exact issue! Starting January 1, 2024, if you fall ill during your vacation, you’ll no longer lose those days. Thanks to the law of July 17, 2023, which modifies the Law of July 3, 1978, employees will now be able to recuperate legal vacation days lost to sickness. Do you take your full amount of vacation/paid time off? According to a 2019 study, the average number of holiday days taken by people in Japan is the same as in the USA. However, Japan offers more official days off, leading to fewer people taking advantage of the full amount of vacation time. In Belgium, where I had more days off, I made sure to use them all! Various factors contribute to this trend, including the fact that US companies are not required to provide paid leave. Both American and Japanese employees often feel pressured to stay at work, albeit for different reasons. In Japan, group pressure seems to deter people from taking holidays, while in the US, it's more about the individual fear of job security.
