I remember waking up in the morning as a kid to the smell of Cuban espresso filling the air as my mom brewed the first batch in our traditional Moka pot, which Cubans call a "cafetera."Who doesn't love the aroma of coffee calling you to wake up in the morning? Raise your hand if you are annoyed thinking of tonight's dinner with a toddler/preschooler and already anticipating the usual scenario ("I don't like this!") featuring the Oscar-winning "Picky Eater" with the not-so-happy ending (serving pasta, AGAIN!). Tummy Talks: simple conversational cards featuring the Tummy and the Food with a cute graphic on one side of the card and a funny 'knock-knock' dialogue between the two characters on the other side. It’s National Apple Day! How we love a FRUIT-ful partnership here at Bread and Butter. And working with the Worldwide Fruit Limited team is no exception as we surpass the magic 20 million milestone with over 20 million pieces of fruit donated from their surplus stock. We joined forces in June 2021, on a joint mission to make sure that any Worldwide Fruit surplus produce is used to feed families in low-income communities. So far, the collaboration has redistributed over a juicy 954 tonnes of fruit including their iconic JAZZ™ apples, which also saves 2.4 million kg CO2. Amazing! Our very own Mark Game, CEO of The Bread and Butter Thing said: “We know that at least half of our members struggled to access affordable fruit and veg before joining Bread and Butter. And now 75% eat fruit and veg on a regular basis thanks to partnerships like Worldwide Fruit. The JAZZ™ apples always go down a storm with our young families! It really does make a huge difference to what we’re trying to achieve. We can’t thank the WFL team enough for all that they’ve contributed.” And this week, we’ll be doing our now-legendary orchard runs to Worldwide Fruits multiple orchard sites to collect over 500,000 ‘wonky’ mixed apples, fresh from the tree! This is our third year working with Worldwide Fruit to redistribute their orchard surplus all picked manually by their teams. Wow. Yesterday I reached out to Ida Tin, The mother of FEMTech, I wanted to see if she could help with my film MILK, We are still looking for funding and I thought she might be able to help as the issue is a complex one. I told Ida Tin, about the thousands of women in the U.K. who are unable to breastfeed and can't afford the rising cost of formula milk, so many babies are starving, and women are having to put themselves and baby in danger to ease the suffering, either through Formula foraging, stealing formula or making their own, which all can have devastating consequences. Sometimes it feels like we are living in another century! Ida had no idea about the situation and wrote back expressing her concern, however, her first question was.... WHY CAN'T THE WOMEN BREASTFEED? I wrote back about the many complexities, but honestly, I was quite surprised she asked. Ida suggested that I share her 'silly question' as a way of bringing about conversation, and hopefully raising awareness as to why the film needs to be made. The why is full of complexity, intertwined in years of trauma, physiological issues, the mothers own hunger, and many many other issues, but this should never be the question. The question should be. HOW DO WE SUPPORT MOTHERS AND BABIES SO THAT THEY DONT HAVE TO GO HUNGRY? We know that the results of malnutrition in the early stages of life go on to affect the growing child for years to come, never mind the enormous impact, the guilt and shame will have on the mother. But we need to do more, we need to do better. Right now baby banks are not allowed to supply formula, and supermarkets are hiking up the cost. We hope to take our film MILK to policy makers, and government to change the system. 💛 Behind every post, every smile, and every patty we serve, there’s a side of this journey you don’t always see. 🫣 I bet some of you think I’m permanently smiling!😅 And while I do genuinely smile 99.5% of the time, there are moments when I’m in tears 😭 because, honestly—this is hard. Building The Vegan Patty Lady has come with so many hurdles, and one of the biggest? Cash flow. 😩 Even with the most brilliant idea, bringing it to life needs funding, and as my parents always reminded me, money doesn’t grow on trees! 😝 So we push through tough times and challenges that, trust me, are gritty and far from glamorous but we keep on going!
