Making life more affordable

About us

A new way of working... The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is about making everyday essentials in life more affordable for people in low income households. We do this through a membership scheme that offers regular provisions such as food and toiletries. We also aim to provide help for everyday, bread and butter things such as debt, energy and mobile phones. People join and become members at their local community hubs that we partner with. Our hubs are projects that are already doing great work in their communities. They are really passionate, proactive and committed teams such as independent food banks, schools, housing associations or community centres. And their volunteers are a vital part of our extended team, helping us deliver affordable food in our communities. TBBT is an innovative way of providing, regular support to people who cannot afford everyday essentials because of the poverty premiums they face simply because of their circumstances. This is not crisis intervention but a long term, regular supply of affordable, everyday essentials, building long term relationships within the community.

Updates

  • It's Friday. The sun is shining. And its Big Give week! The clue is in the title, a week all about giving BIG. TWICE! Because every £1 donated turns into £2 just like magic. But the magic ends on Tuesday! Right now, we’re getting healthy, fresh food to 7,000 families a week via 140 clubs. But we want to do more. More food, more families, less waste. Any donations will help us get more vans on the road, more meals into homes and more surplus food redistributed. Help us double the difference today! https://lnkd.in/equAv5nj #fundraising #biggive #foodcharity #foodsecurityforall #community

  • In case you missed it, we’ve very recently opened three new hubs in a brand new region – Maidstone! Last week, our food team paid a visit to Danielle Robinson and the amazing crew to say thank you and kick off planning for what’s next. Even before these new hubs launched in, this site alone delivered an incredible 2.2 million meals last year, reaching over 71,000 households.    Justin and the team had a brilliant visit. Thanks to our incredible partners at Morrisons and DHL Allington and from all of us at Bread and Butter, a MASSIVE thank you for your continued dedication and partnership. You truly are amazing. #partnership #morrisons #dhl #foodcharity #surplusfood

  • SOUND THE ALARM 🚨 Our Big Give page is now LIVE 🚨 Every donation made from NOW until next Tuesday will be MATCHED. That’s right — double the donation, double the difference. With 7,000 families a week already accessing our affordable fresh, healthy food service through our 140 clubs, we know the demand is growing. Matched funding from this campaign will help us expand faster, reaching more people, in more places, with good food that would otherwise go to waste. Your donation will help put more vans on the road and fill more fridges. Help us turn £1 into £2 and our faces will look like this all week! ⬇️⬇️⬇️ https://lnkd.in/equAv5nj #doubledonations #fundraising #foodsecurityforall #biggive

  • "Smell it, smell it, use your eyes and use your nose!" declares James, this week's entertaining podcast guest. After precisely "50 years, 9 months and 13 days" in engineering across the Merchant Navy, Army, and food production industries, James now keeps himself out of mischief with Bread and Butter and tending to his allotment. Join Mark and Alex on this week's episode of A Slice of Bread and Butter, as they enjoy James's strong (and occasionally sweary!) opinions on sustainability, food systems and generational attitudes toward food waste. https://lnkd.in/edSpjSEf #podcast #sustainability #surplusfood #volunteering

  • DOUBLED UP DONATIONS ALERT! We’re thrilled to bits to announce that we’re taking part in the Big Give Green Match Fund campaign this year. “But what does this mean?!” we hear you cry. This means that ANY donation made to us from next Tuesday the 22nd until Tuesday 29th April will be doubled. Yep, DOUBLED! Right now, we support 7,000 families a week across 140 food clubs. But we know there’s so many more communities that would benefit from our affordable food offering. This matched funding will help us to keep growing and solve two major problems in one go – tackling food waste and filling empty fridges. Every pound you give = two pounds of support. The money raised will go towards funding more vans which means reaching more communities, supporting more families and strengthening more communities. Now that’s what we call a win-win. Keep your eyes peeled for the live link on Tuesday! https://lnkd.in/equAv5nj #foodcharity #matchfunding #foodsecurityforall #biggive #fundraising

  • This week's Slice of Bread and Butter podcast features Byker legend, Penny Walters. It's fair to say that Penny tells it like it is. And it's this Northern grit, honesty and fearlessness that's made her the go-to community figure in Byker that she is today. Join us as we chat with Penny about her incredible journey from working 70-hour weeks at a supermarket, surviving on pasta with margarine to speaking at Westminster about food insecurity as a The Food Foundation ambassador. https://lnkd.in/eZ7fcz6H #podcast #community #foodsecurityforall #surplusfood

  • New places, new spaces and new faces. Exciting stuff! And brilliant to work with the team Maidstone Borough Council.

  • It's podcast day! This week brings the final of our Team Talk mini series. We take you behind the scenes to hear directly from the team at Bread and Butter HQ. Whilst these guys might not be out in our hubs everyday, they're busy making sure that things get to where they need to be and at the right time. This includes the all important food, organising the trucks carrying the food, texts to order the food and making sure people get the food. So important stuff! But they're also privvy to moments such as the one Samantha describes in the soundbite below. When people don't need us anymore. And that's pretty magic. https://lnkd.in/esvbMvZh #podcast #behindthescenes #workinglife #foodsecurity #charity

  • Today is #WorldHealthDay, and this year’s theme is all about the importance of maternal and newborn health around the world. It’s no secret that there are many devastating situations happening internationally, endangering the lives and welfare of pregnant women and babies, but there are also quite shocking issues effecting young families right here on our doorstep too. Having access to affordable, healthy food is essential at any age, especially for little ones in those early years. Since joining Bread and Butter, 68% of our members say they can now afford to feed their families for the week ahead. Nearly 80% say that we help them access better food than they could otherwise afford with 79% are eating more fruit and vegetables. While this is provides some hope, we know that there are still many mums and children out there slipping through the cracks, unable to afford healthy food for their family. A survey focussed on support for families conducted late last year found that among members with 0-4 year olds, 24% said their children sometimes or often skip meals because they can't afford food, and 76% say they sometimes or often skip meals so their children can eat because they can't afford for everyone. Research from the The Food Foundation shows that healthy food costs more than double the price of processed, less healthy options. And our own insights show that nearly all of our members said that they’d buy more fresh fruit and vegetables if they were available and affordable nearby. This just goes to show that the main barriers to this are affordability and access. One NHS initiative that is a step in the right direction is the #HealthyStart card. We’re one of the only food support services to accept it but have found that way too many families are missing out on the scheme, leaving over 220,000 families without access to this vital support. We do what we can to promote it as best we can locally, but more needs to be done on a national level to raise awareness around it. This is just one of the wins we believe could be put in place to help ease the pressure on families findings things tough. The government’s new food strategy needs to prioritise the affordability of healthy food, look at expanding school meal programmes and offer more nutrition support in low income areas.
