Green Impact actions to try this month: January ⬇️ This month, we are highlighting some Green Impact actions that are perfect to complete in January. ◾ General 009: Take part in a citizen science survey and encourage others to join in. The Big Garden Birdwatch takes place 24-26 January and is a great way to get involved in citizen science (more info later in this newsletter!). ◾ General 080: Encourage colleagues to make a Sustainable New Year's resolution and record the resolutions on a physical or virtual notice board. ◾ General 045: Create a dedicated area where staff and students can donate unwanted items for reuse by others. If you’re in a lab, you can also do this with unwanted chemicals on Labs Accreditation 036! ◾ General 060: Make sure everyone is aware of the process to report dripping taps or other water wastage. After the winter closedown is a great time to check for any wastage and report it so it can get fixed! ◾ General 065: Encourage staff to use their volunteer days and give back to the local community. Go to the toolkit now to try these in your team: https://bit.ly/403v1sn If you are not yet involved in Green Impact, get in touch with GreenImpact@york.ac.uk to find out more and set up a team in your department! #GreenImpact #sustainabilityatyork

Please sign and share!! Tell the USDA you support strong, clear labeling regulations so consumers can make informed choices!! One recent analysis found that 85% of label claims lacked meaningful substantiation. That not only harms consumers and the environment but also food producers who are doing the right thing and producing food in ways that protect wildlife and promote biodiversity. The USDA should disallow vague and undefined terms and make third-party, on-site certification mandatory — not optional. Terms like “sustainably farmed,” “regeneratively raised,” “carbon neutral,” and “environmentally responsible” are currently so nebulous that they serve no clear purpose beyond sales. You can speak up on this issue by contacting the USDA. Demand that this top U.S. food and agriculture agency protect consumers and the planet with stronger labeling standards. We can’t meet biodiversity goals or build the world we envision while our government keeps busy rubberstamping misinformation. https://lnkd.in/erXAy5i5

As part of our community engagement work we now donate to the University of Jyväskylä, a leading university in Europe in the field of biodiversity: https://lnkd.in/dwW8b5Mi The university has conducted ground-breaking research on how financial accounts can be exploited to understand the carbon and biodiversity footprint of any organization. By supporting biodiversity-related footprint research Nordea strives to support increased understanding of the corporate and financial sector and society at large about nature in the Nordic region. #Nordea

Biodiversity loss is a fundamental risk to global economy. We depend on plants and animals and ecosystems to develop e.g. medicine or building materials. Nordea has just donated EUR 200,000 to research on biodiversity footprint 👣

Greetings! This Earth.org article exposes the hidden costs of cheap meat and dairy: government subsidies. There's a reason their prices do not go high as they should be, reflecting the tremendous cocts these industries incur on the environment. These subsidies distort market prices, making animal products artificially cheap and encouraging overconsumption. The environmental consequences are significant, with animal agriculture contributing heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. The article calls for a shift away from subsidies and towards a more sustainable food system. Keep following to learn more about how #cultivatedmeat can help change the tide in the struggle for a cleaner environment. https://lnkd.in/e8gqZ34e #SupportSustainableFood #PlantBased #RegenerativeAgriculture

We are proud to share that we have partnered with Robert Gordon University to restore Waterside Farm, one of the largest biodiversity projects on a university campus in Scotland. The SRM Foundation has donated £100,000 to enhance the site’s already high carbon-holding capacity and to demonstrate an exemplary approach to sustainable land stewardship, crucial to achieve a clean energy economy. The project seeks to support the transformation of the site into a thriving habitat for a range of threatened species whilst also safeguarding the area for future generations. Our Chief Executive Officer Francesco Mazzagatti commented: “Being the first project for our foundation, we intend to be closely involved in order to document the measurable benefits of restoring a biodiversity site so we can showcase the immense importance of climate philanthropy in the transition to a clean energy economy.” Find out more about the project on our website using the link below. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #Biodiversity 🔗https://lnkd.in/gDk6c7gZ
