Transforming Classics into Modern Masterpieces No, I don’t want to fall in love 💔… Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” in an Italian 🇮🇹 classical remix 🔄 I’m excited to share my latest project where I blend the haunting melody of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” with the rich, emotive elements of classical Italian opera. This remix brings a fresh perspective to a beloved classic, showcasing the timeless beauty of both genres. For my fellow professionals: How do you incorporate classic elements into your modern projects to create something unique/impactful?

Spontaneous trip to see Cosi Fan Tutte this weekend at Edinburgh International Festival and my first ever Opera I was a bit concerned if I'd be able to sit for 3.5hrs unsure what an opera was like. Would I need to make an escape in the interval 😄? I stayed, it was fantastic. I really enjoyed it. What I Loved 😍 - How the performance was stripped back from set, costumes, special effects yet was so captivating and engaging. - The expresiveness of the cast to portray their emotions to the audience. Through song...in Italian & still resonate. - How beautiful and powerful the Italian language is. I tried to imagine it in English and it just didn't sound as good. 😄 - How amazing it was to see the synergy of the orchestra and vocalists within the performances. What I Wondered 🤔 - This was a classical opera and the audience was mostly white, 40+, middle class. The cast had 1 person of colour (although she was lead)...how do we make performances and these mediums of preformance more appealing and accessible to a diverse range of people? *EIF does have affordability program for tickets. Which I think is great for all culture & arts events: https://lnkd.in/eixGgBZS - What are places like Royal Conservatoire of Scotland doing to inspire new generations of classical performers and writers? - How much interpretation is put on the original script or is it pretty much preformed as it was originally written? - Conducting is a workout! To imagine that this piece was written in the 17th century and still resonates with an audience today just shows how creativity is timeless. Looking forward to more shows over the next month.

Opera: Not everything is for everyone, but there must be something for everyone. In a climate of diminishing funding for the arts, never complain. Don’t feel insulted, even if you have been. Be inspired and inspiring. Be brave, proud, resilient, and humble. Tell your audiences you love them; they’re your best ambassadors. Say what you do and do what you say. Turn the vision of today into the reality of tomorrow. Be a pragmatic idealist. Finish what you’ve started. Never compromise on excellence. Adhere to your budgets. And above all: strive to change the way that people think about themselves and the world in which they live.

The 2024 recipient of the Innovative Concert of the Year Award at OPUS Klassik, Dorothee Kalbhenn, believes that the institution she works with "should behave like a good neighbour, who cares about the people around them.” The idea of her award-winning ‘Orchestra Society’ encourages communication and bringing together different groups to achieve a common result. Progress and empowerment fuels a necessity for collaboration between a wide range of players; large arts organisations, concert halls, opera houses, orchestras - and associations, schools, and refugee centers. Dorothee Kalbhenn, who is the Program Director of the Konzerthaus Berlin and on the 2025 Classical:NEXT Jury, and musician and project designer Kian Jazdi discuss why small and large institutions should team up, listen and pay attention to each other. #classicalmusic #innovation #collaboration

Proud to be part of this conference: "Although there is clearly demand for new work, there is next to no institutional context to learn the skills necessary for new opera development. For example, Germany produces around 80 new works annually; yet in the entire country there isn't a single degree or certificate-granting program for training future opera creators. How are these artists – whether composers, librettists, directors or conductors – supposed to hone their craft to produce successful new pieces? NOD5 "OPERAtion education" aims to bring together artists, professors, and opera houses to take this problem head-on." #newoperadialogues #NOD5

Leadership Tip #152: Intrigue, hidden agendas, and misunderstandings MURDER good intentions I love great opera!! The orchestra, the dancers, the singers, the costumes, the scenery, and the props all come together to create an “edge of your seat” 💃 evening. The beauty that emanates from many moving parts will awe the most seasoned project manager. Beyond the performance – let’s look at the story that brings everyone together. Almost every opera is based on a love triangle 👩❤️💋👨associated with much intrigue and hidden agendas. At the end, at least one person dies 😬. The assumptions and misunderstandings that are revealed in the final scene leave the characters regretting their choices. 😓 I know when I attend an opera there will be intrigue and misunderstandings and know there will be a murder and regret before the final curtain. This is okay because it is all pretend. In real life, we do not need/nor can we afford to accept 👓hidden agendas 🐘 and assumptions that drive so many misunderstandings. So, you might ask, what can a leader do? A leader can do quite a lot: 💙 Pay attention 💛 Listen 💚 Watch for cues that something is not quite right 💜 Ask questions 🖤 Clarify answers and arguments 💗 Engage people to identify a solution 💖 Rinse and repeat The performing arts provide so many leadership metaphors. I’m curious when you buy tickets for a live performance, what type of artform do you choose?
