🧩 The Public Health Puzzle in Texas 🏥 As I survey the public health landscape across our vast state, I'm struck by both its complexities and opportunities. Texas faces obstacles like chronic disease, maternal health crises, and threats of illness, disasters, and more. The puzzle is further layered by our geographic and socioeconomic diversity. Public health needs can vary tremendously between rural towns and major cities when factoring in healthcare access, environmental risks, and resource availability. No single organization can solve these intricate challenges alone. Strengthening our public health safety net will take a collaborative effort bridging governments, hospitals, nonprofits, businesses, and communities. At Community Health Choice, providing accessible, quality coverage is core is our mission. But we're also leaning into our civic duty as a catalyst for broader public health initiatives - from equitable maternal care models to preventative education campaigns. I invite you to share perspectives on positively impacting public health statewide. What are the biggest needs or barriers in your community? Building strong relationships and trust within the community enables rural healthcare providers to better understand and respond to the unique needs of the population. The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) Public Health AmeriCorps program is designed to address the public health needs of local communities while creating pathways to high-quality public health careers. There is a current AmeriCorps service opportunity with the Maryland Department of Health to advance existing efforts around food and nutrition security, safe physical activity access, social connectedness and health equity. The Alliance for Health Equity has announced that Union Community Care has been selected as the Federally Qualified Health Center to operate at AHE’s Brandywine Center. Union Community Care will provide primary medical care, maternal and child health, dental care, behavioral health, and social support services for the Greater Coatesville area. PHI’s California Alliance of Academics and Communities for Public Health Equity (the Alliance) is a statewide policy, training and research collaboration that brings together California communities disproportionately impacted by health disparities with public health schools and programs, along with public health departments, to help build a common agenda, grow a workforce dedicated to advancing health equity and catalyze equity-driven policy change. In 2023, the Alliance launched their Community Action Fund (CAF) to support California community-based organizations in building their capacity to partner with public health departments and university schools and programs of public health. The CAF acknowledges the crucial role that advocacy and service organizations play in designing, leading and implementing systemic changes for health and equity—building capacity and power in local communities. In 2023, seven CBOs were selected to receive more than $130,000—and who, collectively, are estimated to reach over 1 million Californians through their CAF projects. Learn more:
