Unsurprisingly, the hiring market has slowed for the holidays. Last month we saw 44 associates make lateral moves in Toronto. Here's what you need to know: • Litigation continues to be the busiest practice area, accounting for 16 moves • Real estate and banking & finance were the next busiest practice areas • Corporate hiring – in private practice and in-house – remains slow • 2022, 2021 & 2019 calls made the most moves While firms are pausing hiring decisions until the new year, December is when most lawyers reflect on their careers and strategize for the year ahead. If you asked me for a summer market prediction a few months ago, I probably would have told you that summer tends to be slower for laterals as law firms are focusing on summer associates and looking to their new incoming class in the fall. While I’m sure firms are still busy with summers, the number of new jobs posted recently speak for themselves. Today alone we had four new jobs open up in Texas: 1. 3+ year Finance Associate in Houston with an AmLaw 5 firm. 2. 3-5 year Energy Transactions and Projects Associate in Houston with a top 3 Texas firm. 3. 2-4 year Litigation Associate in Houston with an AmLaw 200 firm. 4. 3-5 year Product Liability and Class Action Litigation Associate in Dallas with an AmLaw 200 firm. 7 interview questions to ask for a corporate real estate position: Ask about the job: Why is this position open? Ask about your territory: Which markets does this role cover? Ask about pay and benefits: What is the base salary? Stock options? Bonus? Company car? Ask about daily responsibilities: Walk me through a typical day in this position. Ask about metrics for performance: How many approvals and contracts are required for this position? It's the morning after Offer Day on Bay Street, so sharing this message again for all of the students who didn't get an offer yesterday. You're not alone. I didn’t get hired through the formal recruit and I know a lot of successful Bay Street partners and associates who didn't get hired either. I remember sitting with my phone at 5pm anxiously hoping it would ring. It did. I was told that I was first runner-up: “We just wanted to let you know so that you can make an informed decision about your other offers”. I had no other offers. When the phone rang again 20 minutes later, I learned the other candidates had accepted and there was no spot for me. It seems dramatic now, but at the time I thought my legal career was over before it started. I felt I had failed and it seemed like everyone else had an offer. This was the first time in my life, at least that I can remember, things didn't go as planned. If you find yourself in a similar place, give yourself grace. Your identity and worth is not tied to your achievements. After taking some time to process, I spoke with several lawyers I had interviewed with for feedback. One partner in particular helped guide me in a direction that was better aligned with where I wanted to go (thank you, Megan Keenberg, C.S.). A few others took time to help make introductions (thank you, Adam Black and Oren Weinberg). I ended up landing an articling position with one of the leading family law firms in Toronto, which was the practice area I was truly most interested in throughout law school. As a former lawyer and now legal recruiter, I assure you: while your journey to this point was likely linear, most lawyers' careers don't follow a straight line. There is a spot for you in the legal profession if you want it.
