Excited to share the op-ed that Daphne Bond-Godfrey and I co-authored in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution titled "Intentionality is key to creating equitable opportunity within commercial real estate". In this article we touch on the importance of doing our part to shape the future of the built environment, work that directly aligns with the Urban Land Institute and Baker Tilly US’s commitments to DEI, stewardship and social impact. As we think about shaping the future our industry, its imperative that we commit to addressing the lack of diverse representation in commercial real estate. For me, two areas of focus are creating onramps for diverse talent into the industry, and identifying ways to democratize access to capital for diverse developers and asset managers. Every day, I am energized by the opportunity to lead the DevelUP platform, an extensive ecosystem comprising hundreds of multidisciplinary stakeholders from across the nation. Their shared commitment to enhancing our industry fuels our collective progress. I am deeply grateful for this journey and the inspiring change-makers I have encountered along the way. Indiana jones, M&A, and the search for the holy corporate grail. With Dr Jones Senior lying on the ground facing life-threatening injuries inflicted by one of his competitors, Indiana has no option but to run the gauntlets and complete the search, acquiring the potentially restorative holy grail. Under immense pressure, he succeeds but doesn't truly know if the grail is holy or if it is indeed a poison chalice. Indiana, our valiant CEO, had only one option to take serious, dramatic transformative action: acquiring a company that might have the power to restore his failing company, but failing could have drastic implications for him and his parent. On Day 3 of Scott Moeller's M&A course, we experienced the fast-paced M&A process, the game playing, the pressure to make decisions, the communication challenges, fatigue (I can only imagine what toll months of hostile M&A activity would have on a business, the employees, shareholders, board and management team over an extended period) in a brilliant quick-fire 4-hour simulation. The simulation underscored the crucial role of communication, scenario planning, human bias, and the significance of trusted advisors. It also emphasized that M&A is not solely about the bottom line, but also about the people and the process. In the end, Indiana picked right – All was restored, and the parent was saved. Despite all collapsing around them (you can't control the economic environment), they managed to exit without the grail and parent saved.
