The NIHR’s £20 million investment in the UK Dementia Research Institute is set to drive breakthroughs in dementia and neurodegenerative disease research, with potential positioning of the UK as a global leader. This funding will advance diagnostics, treatment development, and training of specialists, while new AI and data initiatives will accelerate discovery. Amid rising dementia cases and a projected £90 billion annual economic burden by 2040, the investment emphasizes urgent action to close the gap in treatment availability and safeguard public health. However, challenges in treatment availability, healthcare capacity, data ethics, and funding sustainability remain. Addressing these will be essential to realizing the full impact of this investment on patient outcomes and the healthcare system.

As a neonatologist and gut advocate for Skin-to-skin or Kangaroo care as well as development and maintenance of the microbiome, this study combines both of my passions. It is important to recognize that S2S is not just "touchy-feely" with psychological benefits, but there are REAL physiological responses that make this such a positive intervention. While some strides have been made in clinical research, we are still decades behind where we need to be. Thanks to Evvy, we are turning the conversation about the gender health gap into a movement with a dedicated day of observance. Today marks Equal Research Day, an initiative by Evvy to celebrate the passing of the NIH Revitalization Act, which first required the inclusion of women in clinical research in 1993. At the time, researchers held biased concerns that female hormone fluctuations made women too "difficult" to study and increased research costs. Despite the progress made since then, disparities persist. For instance, a 2019 study found that only 4% of NIH-funded studies focused specifically on the health needs of non-white women. Additionally, older adults, pregnant and lactating individuals, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, and people with disabilities remain significantly underrepresented. Only 1.8% of studies included pregnant women, despite their critical need for research-backed health information. Moreover, menopausal women, typically between the ages of 45 and 55, are often overlooked in clinical trials despite representing a significant portion of the population with unique health needs. On this Equal Research Day, let’s champion the importance of inclusive research and strive for a future where every group is represented and studied. Many people don’t realize that women weren’t required in U.S. clinical research until 1993. That’s an entire medical history without us, where the male body was used as the default human body, representing us all. The thalidomide birth defects of the 60s made it feel safer to exclude women entirely rather than risk research with people who could become pregnant. Plus, our pesky monthly fluctuations in hormones were inconveniently tricky to control for in research. But women are 50-75% more likely to have adverse drug reactions. Our heart attack symptoms are different. We’re at higher risk of overdose from anaestethia. Not to mention topics that were barely researched at all until recently, like menopause, the clitoris and pleasure, and pain dismissal by doctors. The research gaps are event wider for trans and non-binary people, people of color, and more. Couldn’t be happier to see companies like Evvy and Midi Health leading the way on spreading the word and closing the data gap. Specificity matters in medicine, and it matters in Indigenous health. We're entering an era of disease-modifying therapies for dementia: treatments that stall disease progression, rather than just tackling symptoms. But Indigenous populations in wealthy countries, like Australia, the US and Canada, are more likely than non-Indigenous people to be diagnosed with "Dementia Otherwise Not Specified" - and less likely to have their specific dementia subtype accurately recorded. As neurologist Dr Antonia Clarke explains, this lack of diagnostic sophistication has major implications for disease progression and quality of life. "Accurate diagnosis of dementia subtypes is really critical to diversify not only study populations, but also treatment groups," she explained to Philippa Harris, host of The Lancet Healthy Longevity podcast. Working with Indigenous clinicians and public health experts, Antonia has conducted a systematic review of dementia prevalence in Indigenous communities in HDI (Human Development Index) countries. Dementia is emerging as a key health priority in these indigenous communities, which experience a disproportionate burden of disease, thanks to structural and socioeconomic inequity, the legacy of colonialism and other factors. There were some striking findings at odds with trends in non-Indigenous populations: - higher dementia risk or prevalence among indigenous men, in contrast to the usual trend of higher dementia prevalence in women - in Australia, social determinants of health like lower education or history of police custody were key risk factors among Aboriginal men compared to women.
