Trust is earned over time and with consistency. Leadership requires trust.

In this book the author has discussed at length Alexander the Great, Duke of Wellington, General Ulysses S Grant and Adolf Hitler as Commanders in battle - battles against King Darius of Persia at Issus and Gaugamela, Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo, General Robert E Lee throughout the American Civil War and the Allies in WW II respectively. There was an involvement of theatrics by Alexander, Wellington and Hitler; speeches by Alexander, Hitler; leading by example especially by Alexander, Wellington and Grant; trust issues with subordinate commanders as in case of Hitler who besides the Land, Air and Naval Headquarters created an OKH which had a think tank like Colonel General Jodl, a sycophant like Field Marshal Von Keitel and a Hitler to lord over them. Hitler had not much of faith in the Armed Forces, and it was further affected after the July 1944 plot on his life. An interesting read on leadership and command, but may not be something new for those who served or are serving in Armed Forces.

A few quotes that jumped out at me: (1) "You have to look at the tools you have and see how you can apply them to achieve the effects you need. You may have to start with one tool and then swap it for another. Not all the tools you have will be appropriate to what you are trying to do." (2) "The challenge of strategy is matching military outcomes to political expectations." (3) "In applying operational art, you have to look up to strategy as much if not more than you look down to tactical application. We tend to default down."
