Culture champions and recognition warriors - do you have a process for monthly recognition of birthdays, work anniversaries, etc.? I get our automated reminders on the day of but I want to be more proactive and give myself enough time to send a handwritten card. It's a lot to keep track of with a 30 person team. My plan is to start doing a review of the month's events on the 1st so I know what's coming and can get my cards sent out. It's manual and will be time consuming but it will make sure I'm not surprised by anything. What process do you use?

“You are the brand for your function. Always be proud to flaunt it” This I usually tell my team, even if he is a picker or a supervisor, he has to proudly speak of what he is doing. I believe in advocacy for my function as very few out of the network knows what is being done. About our work we share with functions like IT, HR, Admin, Legal, Finance, Marketing and others Few key numbers are always helpful, like LFL, YTD growth. Talk about team journey in 30 seconds. Share about individuals and team role in company. The impact is evident when team members are invited for discussions and their feedback is accepted. It adds to their confidence and better results on ground.

Stop celebrating your team with generic compliments. Half-hearted praises such as “nice work” and “good job” can apply to anyone. Instead of these generic remarks, try to be specific when praising team members on LinkedIn. People feel the most valued when the praise is direct and precise. Next time you want to recognize a team member on LinkedIn, here are three things to include: 1. What did they do? Detail the actual task or accomplishment. 2. What impact did they have? Describe how their work positively impacted the organization. 3. What values/traits did they demonstrate? Outline their unique approach and style. Make your praise as great as their achievements - bland accolades don’t cut it.

What does it take to feel engaged and satisfied at work? Is it more money, higher status, perks like ping pong tables and cold brew on tap? None of the above. People need: ✔ Autonomy to control their work ✔ Recognition for their contributions ✔ To be of service to those around them ✔ To demonstrate mastery in their chosen craft ✔ To learn new skills to thrive and open additional doors ✔ To find purpose in a shared mission Different individuals want different mixes of the above. It’s up to you to know which of your team members are most motivated by the right cocktail of the activities above. If you simply try to reward with merit increases, but you’re missing the right ingredients, your team is going to leave. Simple as that.
