Each day, road workers face inherent risks while keeping our highways safe. However, when drivers get distracted, it’s dangerous for everyone. In 2022, more than 80% of the people who died in work zones were drivers and passengers (based on NHTSA FARS data). It’s important to slow down and stay alert when you see a road construction zone. To quote the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), "Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.” As today marks the Social Media Storm for National Work Zone Awareness Week, join the conversation by commenting #NWZAW below! #Ironwear #stayalert #staysafe #orange4Safety #MDOTcares #WorkZoneSafety #HighwaySafety #TrafficSafety

National Work Zone Awareness Week kicks off next week and this year’s theme is "Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.” What many fail to recognize is that the vast majority of people killed in work zone crashes are motorists and their passengers. In 2021, 778 drivers and their passengers died in work zones (based on NHTSA FARS data), making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone. In the summer of 2020, crews were working on a section of Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, near Chilliwack, British Columbia. The project involved resurfacing a stretch of the busy road, and flaggers were out managing the flow of traffic to keep both the crew and passing vehicles safe. During one afternoon shift, a semi-truck approached the work zone at a high speed. The flagger at the front noticed the truck wasn’t slowing down. With quick thinking, the flagger radioed ahead, warning the rest of the crew and moving aside just in time as the truck barreled through, barely missing the barriers set up around the workers. This close call is just one of many incidents that illustrate the real dangers road crews face daily. While other safety measures play a vital role, clear, durable signage serves as the first line of defense for your crew, keeping everyone safer and drivers alert. When managing a work zone, always be sure to invest in proper signage. Regrettably, each year approximately 23 roadside workers and first responders lose their lives (equivalent to one every two weeks), with hundreds more sustaining injuries while attending to disabled vehicles. Despite being enacted across all 50 states, Move Over laws remain unfamiliar to 71 percent of Americans, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These laws mandate that drivers reduce their speed and, when possible, change lanes to ensure the safety of these workers. #SlowDownMoveOver #SafetyFirst #GuardianFleetServices #GuardianoftheHighways #Towing #TowingandRecovery #SpecializedTransport #SpecializedTransportation #TowLife #RoadsideSafety #MoveOverLaws #RoadsideAssistance #SlowDownSaveLives #FirstResponderSafety #TowingServices
