IT'S HERE: The EU Consumer Acceptance Survey of Edible Insects Report is now available! 🚀 The long-awaited report boasts a massive sample of 3,000 survey participants across Europe’s six largest markets. It was conducted by accredited external researchers with support from academia. Some key findings: ✅ 56% of the Europeans who tried insect-enriched food products rated the taste as “very good.” ✅ Sports supplements are amongst the most appealing insect-enriched food products, with 71% of the respondents saying they would consume them. ✅ Men who exercise regularly (76%) are more likely to integrate food products made with insect ingredients in their diets than women (65%) from the same group. ✅ The determinant factor for trying insect-enriched foods is their taste with 71% of the respondents confirming this, while health benefits come in second place (47%), followed closely by price (45%). Thanks to IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) for their - as usual - great work. I will study this report in detail. It seems to confirm and to a large extent complement some studies carried out a few years ago by private companies (Ynsect, ...). Products of insect origin are associated with natural, nutritious, healthy and sustainable ingredients and, increasingly, with delicious food. They deserve it. Even if it takes a long time to produce them at scale, the industry will get there. So focusing on businesses that are profitable and accessible is one of the first options - in the short term. Finally, to get people to adopt these products, my recommendation to the insect industry and its customers would be around marketing and communication: - Lead your own marketing proposition and consequently control the way the media communicates about them (no more adult insects in the middle of a plate, just as we do not put a whole pork, chicken or beef on a plate). - Then, ...
Great output - it's so important to dispel the myth that 'nobody would eat insects because they're gross'. They will, and they do. The opportunity and the need is there, for those ready and able to make the most of it! 🐛 🏋♂️
Big bravo to all of your team! The survey not only sheds the much needed light on the acceptance of insect-enriched foods but also underscores the critical role of research and public engagement in transitioning towards more sustainable food sources!
Thank you for sharing!
Congratulations and thank you Steven Barbosa and IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) team for the very important work for the whole insect industry! 👏 👏 👏
Thank you for the amazing work IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed). 👏 👏👏 I see many managerial implications, starting with how to market insect-enriched food products. #Sustainability is an important reason why we do what we do in the insect industry, no doubt. Yet studies and this survey seem to come to a similar conclusion: marketing great taste and health benefits could prove more effective than insisting on the low carbon footprint of #edibleinsects in communication, which we sometimes tend to do!
