The ethics of AI is advancing in many fields of application. Interspecies Internet believes questions of ethics must go hand-in-hand with approaching technological interfaces and decoding non-human animal signals 🙌 Our trustee Diana Reiss explores in this article 👉
🐝 Since von Frisch made the breakthrough discovery of the bee waggle dance, through to Roger Payne's whale songs that sparked a movement, Jane Goodall's pioneering work with chimps, and Irene Pepperberg's groundbreaking parrot studies—scientists have been gradually unveiling the complexity of animal communication. 🗣️ 🤖 Today, with AI opening new possibilities, our trustee Dr. Diana Reiss and other leading researchers are debating critical ethical questions generated by advances in the field. 👉 A recent piece in Nautilus Magazine highlights these pressing issues, examining the implications of merely understanding animal communication versus engaging in a dialogue with them. In other words, if we successfully decode another species' communication, should we talk back? 👀 What do you think? Do other species want to have a conversation with us? In an exciting new study, researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University have found that the tiny bluestreak cleaner wrasse may be "self-aware"! This little tropical fish was observed using mirrors to check its body size and make decisions on whether to engage with other fish. 🤯 This discovery challenges what we know about animal intelligence and suggests that even small-brained species can possess metacognitive abilities like self-assessment and planning. Have you always dreamed of talking to your pets? This week in our AI news: Jane Lawton, Impact Manager at the "Earth Species Project," discusses an experiment where a machine and a bird engage in a dialogue to understand animal communication. Research has discovered complex communication in plants and animals, such as Amazonian turtles emitting over 200 sound frequencies. The project aims to classify animal sounds using AI to map and understand communication patterns between species. The first dialogue between a machine and a bird is intended to understand communication mechanisms. Watch Jane Lawton's presentation video.

Drop a YES in the comments and we will message you more information 10 Remarkable Things We've Recently Learned about Animals: Animals consistently impress us with their abilities and cognition. As a result, science has come a long way since people believed flies spontaneously generated from beef. Or that anteaters came from the moon. Fortunately, the tide of animal discovery hasn't slowed but gained traction as human comprehension scrutiny has improved. "Current debates on the concept of a Culture of Care show that the animal perspective – that is, their agency in the context of experimental research – is largely ignored. It is a major shortcoming of the concept that consideration of animals does not go beyond a broad discussion of wellbeing... If a Culture of Care were to develop in this direction, science could begin to break free from the human-centered viewpoint which still permits, legally and socially, the use of sentient animals in research."
